INTRODUCTION
An entrepreneur is an individual who creates a new business, bearing most of the risks
and enjoying most of the rewards. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as an innovator, a source
of ideas, goods, services, and business or procedure. The word entrepreneur came from France
word entreprendre which mean ‘to take’ or ‘to try’. There is also mention that an entrepreneur
is an individual who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business (Kuratko and
Hodgetts, 2001).

In this case study, we need to make a case study about one local entrepreneur icon in
Sabah who runs a successful business. Thus, we need to find a truly local Sabahan entrepreneur.
After a group discussion and brainstorming is made, we choose a grill and burger restaurants
which is Grill Patio. This business grew up in the middle of Kota Kinabalu. We choose Grill
Patio as our study because it is barely for us to see that restaurant without customer and for
sure we know that the owner of this business also a local Sabahan entrepreneur.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND
The personal background of the owner Grill Patio (Bandaran Outlet) is a young woman
name Hariati Binti Aminudin. Her age is 20 years old. She is been running her brother’s
business for a couple years. While managing her outlet at Bandaran, she still studying in Kolej
Teknikal Yayasan Sabah at Yayasan Sabah. She was born at Kampung Petagas. She is the
youngest siblings among her brothers. Her father is a retired policeman and her mother is
fulltime housewife.

The real owner of this business is her brother among her siblings. She didn’t tell about
her brother’s name and age but did tell us about his brother business chronology. Before her
brother start his own business, he started work as a chef at Upperstar Restaurant. He worked
there without any culinary certificate or competencies.
After working at Upperstar Restaurant, he then resigned from being a chef and make
his career path into oil and gas which is work at offshore. The major of the offshore work are
not mention by her sister. Yet after a couple years on an oil rig, he changed his mind to make
his own business by opening a stall called Grill Patio.

BUSINESS BACKGROUND
Grill patio was first established in 2011. It was founded by her brother who are
interested in cooking. Firstly, it was only for his hobby to set up a burger stall. But after
receiving positive feedback, he tried to make a bigger stall and rent a restaurant to allow
customer eat their burger on the spot. Their first stall is only a small stall or we called it as
“burger ramly’s stall”. They only have takeaway service. Their stall is run by 2 of their siblings.
To set up their stall, they need roughly RM 10,000 to start their business. Luckily, their parents
loaned to them and their parents help them. Their parents provided the funds to buy the goods
they needed. Their parents forbid them to loan a bank because they can help financially.

After years selling burgers, they open a burger shop and it is located at Bandaran, Kota
Kinabalu and it was the first shop they opened after the stall. The profits of selling burgers for
a day is around RM 1200 and their modal to buy meat, buns, sauce and so on is around RM
1000 and it lasts normally for two weeks. Their shop is very popular among the adults and
teenagers. They often promote the shop and help to improve their sales. After their first burger
shop is successful, they opened their shop branch and today they have 4 burger shops including
the first shop. The shop is handled by their siblings and they enlarge their business by doing
delivery around the area. They hire a bunch of employees to help with their business. All of
their shop is successful and today the shop is still running their business.
