 Introduction to Vedic Astrology

Astrology has existed all over the world and at all times. It was most prevalent in ancient religious
cultures like those of Egypt, Babylonia and India. In the Europe and the Middle East this divine
study came to an end in middle ages and was replaced by medieval cultures due to external
forces.

However, the culture and religion of India maintained its continuity from ancient times. It retained
freedom in the realm of spirituality and religion; hence it is not surprising that an older and
perhaps more complete form of astrology survived there. The ritualistic calendar based upon
the stars, continues in India today as it did in Babylonia and Egypt three thousand years ago.
Modern Hindus still give prayers and offerings to the planets today as their counterparts in the
ancient Europe and the Middle East did in their times.

Vedic ("Jyotish" in Sanskrit) or Sidereal astrology differs from Western or Tropical astrology
mainly in that it uses the fixed zodiac as opposed to the moving zodiac. Because of the gradual
tilting of the earth in space on it's axis, the zodiac, if you calculate it from the Sun's relationship
to the Earth, appears to be moving at the rate of a little less than 1/60th of a degree per year.
Currently, the relative or movable zodiac is off or out of alignment with the fixed or real star-
based zodiac by roughly 24 degrees.

While both systems (Vedic & Western) use the 12 signs we all know, they use different points
of reference for Aries, the starting point of the zodiac. The tropical zodiac used by most western
astrologers places 0 degrees of Aries at the spring equinox on March 21. The sidereal zodiac
used by Vedic astrologers; however, use a fixed star reference from which to begin the first sign.
The difference is due to a slow movement (one degree every 72 years) of the Earth and the
solar system through the galaxy. This celestial phenomenon is known as the precession of the
equinoxes. Approximately 2000 years ago, there was no difference in the two zodiacs. Over
time, the gap increased so that now there is almost a 24-degree lag between the tropical and
sidereal zodiac.

We see, therefore, that two different methods of determining the signs of the zodiac exist. Each
is based on a different kind of calculation. Neither is necessarily wrong. Both are using different
measurements, though they employ the same language to speak of them.

Question: I will be staying at Dehradun from 16th July onwards for 4 college years.
According to my all round benefits, especially destiny and spiritual upliftment, for the
good of the universe, which place should I stay-

1.Staying in private hostel altogether like others in the village (the college is in village, 9
km away from the city) and abiding by their rules OR

2.Staying in personal rental house separately, away from the University, students and
mess, and thus stay in the city abiding by my own rules?

Answer: For your spiritual growth as well as practical learning, you have to stay with others. It
will not be easy and you have to take some care and take life and people as they come, with
open mind. You neither have to be too suspicious nor have to be carefree or make friends or
believe others too quickly. If you stay in separate personal rental home, life could be comfortable
but you will not learn many things which will prepare you for life to come after college. Wearing
Ruby and Red Coral will be favorable.
