Clint Barton while preparing for his role in the next Avengers movie takes part in an archery

contest. He shoots 300 arrows at the board. The rules are:

(i) The participant wins 6 coins every time he hits the Bull’s eye

(ii) Every time the participant misses the target completely, he loses 2 coins and

(iii) If the participant hits the target but not the Bull’s eye, he loses 1 coin.

At the end of the game, it is found that Clint has 192 coins, then the number of times he would
have missed the target completely cannot be less than:
Your answer:
Correct answer: 5
Concept: Linear Equations
Hide solution
Solution
Let

P be no. of times Bull’s eye is hit

Q be no. of times the target is missed

R be no. of times target is hit but NOT Bull’s eye

Total shots were taken = 300 shots

Acc. to Question:

P + Q + R = 300 ------ (1)

Given,

Total score= 192 points

Acc. to Question:

6P - 2Q - R = 192 ------ (II)

Adding both (i) & (ii) and Eiminating R:

7P – Q = 492

==> Q = 7P – 492

Note: Neither P nor Q can be negative.

Thus. The minimum value of Q is 5 when P is 71

For every other value of P, Q is either more than 5 or is negative. The minimum possible value
of Q is 5
