Consultancy Regarding Hospital Management

Hospital Management: A Fundamental Part of the Healthcare Enigma

A hospital works 24×7 and hospital physicians and staff needs to be prepared for any
eventuality, be it of minor nature or a critical, emergency health situation. Several
departments provide critical care, using complicated equipment, whilst handling non-medical
matters such as policy development and compliance. All this requires engagement of
knowledgeable, experienced and proactive hospital management companies to run the
institute efficiently. Many a times hospital owners outsource the day-to-day operations of
their hospitals to professional hospital management companies who have the experience to
operate such institutes effectively.

Good hospital management can often be the difference between a well-maintained and
operated hospital and a chaotic environment where the quality of patient care suffers.

The Role of Hospital Management in Transforming Healthcare:

Though “policy” and its restructuring has been the epicentre of healthcare, the manner in
which hospitals operate and manage services is a significant portion of simplifying changes
leading to enriched patient care. Hospital management as well as hospital management
companies, unlike most policymakers, are directly involved in the healthcare system. In the
recent decade and more the object of management attention has widened to include the care
itself. raditionally, hospitals have concentrated on procuring technology and skilled
physicians rather than planning distinctive care processes for patient groups. Healthcare
delivery was solely left to physicians who focused on “the resources clinicians use as they
provide care. Thus there was a clear delineation between healthcare management and clinical
practice.

Now, hospital management is combining business proficiency with an understanding of the

healthcare system to increase both efficiency and effectiveness. With brisk innovation and
reform, the constitution and provision of care have become core to the management of
hospitals and other organizations. This is because patients and people at large expect results
that only skilled management professionals can deliver.

Hospital Management: The Foundation of the Industry

Professionals in hospitals and healthcare administration run a gamut of operations in medical

settings. From management of staff, assisting with budgeting and finance, and making
analytical decisions that impact an entire organization, hospital and health administrators hold
a critical position in the medical industry.

Administrators generally wear multiple hats irrespective of the medical environment they
work in. Hospital management companies are familiar with departments such as human
resources, finance and operations, admissions, etc., and they usually have their
responsibilities defined in each department.

The structure and financing of healthcare are changing rapidly, and hospital management
needs to keep abreast of changes in the medical world to ensure that they are leading their
medical staff in the right direction. Changes can be range from integration of healthcare
systems, new regulations, technological innovations, and training staff on preventive care.
One of the ultimate responsibilities of healthcare management is to improve the quality of
care being given as well as the efficiency in facilities.

Even though the healthcare system is all about improving patients’ lives, the business side of
this industry is equally important for building sustainable hospitals and practices. As with any
efficacious business, dynamics to success can be contributed to talented teams and skilled
leaders, making healthcare and hospital management one of the most important positions in
the industry.

Managing a hospital is a great task as the operational efficiency and patient care satisfaction
impacts the brand of the hospital. Operational management encompasses all the key activities
such as providing services and care to the patients, staff efficiency and satisfaction, revenue
generation for the hospital, maintaining records of the hospital, etc. This herculean task
cannot be carried out by just a few individuals as they cannot be expected to have knowledge
of all the activities, departments and services in a hospital. It is therefore essential to engage a
team of experts for these multifarious roles. This team is termed as the ‘Hospital
Management’ team.

A Hospital management team is the one that is responsible for the overall functioning and
progress of a hospital. It undertakes responsibilities and continuously manages the institution
with a single-minded goal of effective operations and with the skills for continually
improving the facilities and services provided by the hospital.

Some of the responsibilities of the governing members of a hospital management team are:

1. Responsibilities of a CEO (Chief Executive Officer):

 Involvement in day-to-day operations of the hospital. He continuously looks at the

MIS and plans strategies efficient functioning and growth (where required) of the
hospital.
 Ensures that the hospital provides high quality of care and safety to its patients.
 Involved in recruiting appropriately skilled, qualified and experienced staff for the
hospital.
 Involved in the process of implementing applicable and well thought through policies
for all the departments and services of the hospital.
 He maintains a connect with every department within the hospital and well as medical
communities outside the hospital (leaders of industry, statutory law makers, vendors,
community, etc.).

2. Responsibilities of a Medical Director:

 Responsible for developing medical protocols.

 Oversees the performance of the doctors and other medical staff members.
 Prepares the hospital records for the governing body.
 Monitors the quality of medical care.

3. Responsibilities of a Director of Operations/ COO and Performance:

 Responsible for defining policies and systematic work flow for the hospital.
 Reports to the CEO and Hospital Board, providing information on the overall
functioning of the hospital.

operating revenues and expenses.

5. Responsibilities of a Director of Nursing:

 Maintains the patients’ data.

To conclude, a hospital is a complex organisation. The functions of the various human

resources here vary from function supporting services such as medical, paramedical, nursing,
support services, administration, maintenance, etc. Each has an important role to play like
cogs in a wheel. It is imperative for all of them to work and act in tandem as one congruent,
homogeneous body.
