Given that : Vmax = (PL3/3EI) With

P = Load
Vmax = Maximun defection
L = Length
E = Young’s Modulus
I = Moment Inertia

I = πr4/4
Req : L, P, Vmax
Geometry : r
Material : E, ρ
FIND : (a) Minimum Mass (m = (πr2L) ρ), With ρ = density
(b) Minimize Cost
SOLUTION :
Vmax = (PL3/3EI) Subtitute I
Vmax = (PL3/3E)*(4/ πr4) Find r2
r2 = [(4PL3)/(3πEVmax)]1/2
With, m = (πr2L) ρ
m = (πL[(4PL3)/(3πEVmax)]1/2) ρ Req material [f2]
m = [(2L5/2)*((πP)/(3Vmax))1/2][ρ/E1/2] Req Structural [f1]
So, Using table 3.1 we can calculate
(a)

Pine was the most suitable without cost

(b)

And pine also the most suitable with cost

(c)
Pine is most suitable with or without cost so it’s a clear choice but if they didn’t want to use
pine 4340 Steel and 7075 Al was the most suitable
