Rock
Lesson 1
Style History
A populer American music, originating in the 1950's, termed rock ‘n' roll is an outgrowth of the rhythm
and blues style of the 1930's and 1940's. Rock ‘n’ roll instrumentation consisted of vocals and a jazz-
like back-up band with a heavy percussive beat. The foundation of the music is built on the drums and
bass. In the 1960's and 1970's, rock ‘n’ roll metamorphasized into “rock” music. The emphasis of the
music became a heavier groove with a definite straight eighth note pulse. The instrumentation for rock
changed with the use of melodic vocals, larger drum sets, electronic instruments, amplified keyboards
and distorted guitar sounds. Further developments of rack music include punk rock, jazz rack, heavy
metal, alternative, folk rack and progressive rack.
Fundamentals
a.Pulse
‘The pulse of rock is a strong eighth note flow.
b.Foundational instruments
‘The foundational instruments on the drum set in a rock groove is the kick drum and snare
drum.
c. Time focus
Rock grooves are usually focused on the downbeats on counts 1-2-3-4. The foundation of the
groove is based on the snare drum and the kick drums’ relationship in the pattern. Remember
rock encompasses simple playing note-wise but a deep understanding of consistent pulse and
feel. Focus on what the bass guitar is playing. The rhythms of the bass line correspond
directly to the rhythms of the kick drum.
