Painting Music

Designer: Marian Woodington and Erinne Phillips

Technologies Used:
● Makey Makey
○ This is being used to create the physical aspects of our presentation.
● Scratch
○ This is the platform that we are using to code the Makey Makey in order
to make sure it does what we can.
● Soundtrap
○ This is being used to help us create the ambient sounds that are played
when the paintbrush moves across the page.

Learning Goal:
● MU:Cn11.0.T.Ia Demonstrate understanding of relationships between music and
the other arts, other disciplines, varied contexts and daily life.

Assessment:
● We will ask participants to fill out a google form about how they felt while painting
and if the sounds playing were influencing how they painted in order to
experiment how participants’ painting experience and musical experience were
connected.
○ Why did you paint what you did?
○ How did you feel experimenting with the different sounds that the canvas
board created?
○ Do you feel as though there is a connection between the painting that you
created and the music that you heard?
■ Why do you think that is?
○ How did the overall experience make you feel?

Project Overview and Rationale: In this project, we will be melding together both art and
music into an interactive experience for people of all skill levels. To start, we will hand them the
paintbrush and ask them to dip it in water and select a paint. Then we will tell them to start
painting whatever they want. As they paint, ambient sounds will play. We will try to place
speakers right next to them, so the sounds will completely immerse them in the experience.

Plan for Success: In order to get this done, we will need to:
● Create a working prototype by: 11/21/19
● Revise this by: 11/25/19
● Create a revised physical model by: 11/29/19
● Create video by: 12/3/19
● Fix any remaining issues in the model by: 12/6/19
