Air flows steadily at the rate of 0.5 kg/s through an air
‘compressor, entering at 7 m/s velocity, 100 kPa pressure
and 0.95 m? / kg volume and leaving at 5 m/s. 700 kPa and
0.19 m? / kg. The internal energy of the air leaving is
90 kI/kg greater than that of the air entering. Cooling water
in the compressor jackets absorbs heat from the air at the
rate of 58 kW.
(a) compute the rate of shaft work input to the air in kW.
(b) find the ratio of the inlet pipe diameter to outer pipe
diameter.
(OR)
Air at 30°C and 1 bar is compressed reversibly and
polytropically from 5 m° to 1 m*, Calculate the final
temperature, pressure and also the work done and heat
transferred if the index of compressor is 1, 14 and 0.9
respectively. Assume Cp = 1.005 kJ / kg K, Cv = 0.7178
kivkg K.
Explain the camot cycle with the help of P-V and T-S
diagram,
(OR)
One kg of ice at -5°C is exposed to the atmosphere which
is at 20°C. The ice melts and comes into thermal
equilibrium with the atmosphere,
(@)_ Determine the entropy increase of the universe
(b) What is the minimum amount of work necessary to
convert water back into ice at -5°C? Cp of ice is
2,093 ki/kg K and the latent heat of fusion of ice is
333.3 ki/kg.

Steam at 20 bar, 360°C is expanded in a steam turbine to
0.08 bar. It then enters a condenser, where it is condensed
to saturated liquid water. The pump feeds back the water
into the boiler.
(a) Find per kg of steam the network and the cycle
efficiency.
(b) If the turbine and the pump have each 80%
efficiency.
Find the percentage reduction in the network and the eycle
efficiency.
(OR)
Explain the principle of operation of separating and
throttling calorimeter with neat sketch.
A sample of coal has the following percentage composition
by weight : C — 77.7%, Ha — 6.8%, No — 1.2%, S — 2.2%,
Oz — 8.8% and incombustibles — 3.3%. Determine the
minimum quantity of air requires for complete combustion
of I kg of coal and the constituent products of combustion
in kg per kg of coal.
(OR)
Explain the principle of flue gas analysis by Orsat
apparatus.
. Derive the Maxwell’s equations.
(OR)
Write down the first and second ‘Tds equations and derive
the expression for the difference in heat capacities, Cp and
Cv, What does the expression signify?
