CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Social media is a form of electronic communication or websites for social networking
and micro blogging through which users create online communities to share information
and etc.(Paulus, 2006)

Nowadays social media is one of the useful sources of information of the students,
social media had been the source of happiness for many students, but being over
exposed to the social media can affect academic performance of the students also it may
lead the students to be irresponsible.

Aside from the academic performance of the students, social media can also affect
the students mental health. It is the responsibility of each students to bring about major
changes and the lives of the society as a whole through dedicated efforts. In line with the
uncertainties that the future beholds, the onus will be on students to do their studies and
be successful in the future. Nowadays, we observed that facebook is the commonly use
social media platform.

Researchers came up with the study to determine theres an impact of using social
media to the academic performance of Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ students of
Carrascal National High School.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to determine the impact of social media to the academic
performance of the students. It soughts to answer the following questions:

1. Is there a relationship between the academic performance of Grade 7-STE and

Grade 7-SPJ students of Carrascal National High School and the use of social
media ?
2. What are the average grades of Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ students of
Carrascal National High School ?
3. What is the most commonly used social media platform of Grade 7-STE and Grade
7-SPJ students of Carrascal National High School ?

ASSUMPTIONS

The researchers were guided with the following assumptions:

1. There is no relationship between using social media and the academic

performance of Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ students of Carrascal National
High School.
2. The average grades of Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ students of Carrascal
National High School are from average to high.
3. The most common social media platform used by Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ
students of Carrascal National High School is facebook.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The respondents of the study are the 25 students from Grade 7-STE and 25 students
from Grade 7-SPJ of Carrascal National High School.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The research study will highly contribute to the following:

This study will help the teacher to determine if there’s an impact of social media to the
academic performance of the students.

The students will be aware if using social media can affect their academic performance.

The researchers will be more knowledgeable if theres no relationship between using

social media and the academic performance of the students.

This study will give the researchers interest to pursue their own research in the future. It
will serve as their basis for the study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to the Pew Research Center, social media user tend to be younger.
Nearly 90% of people between the ages of 18 and 29 used at least one form of social
media.
Social media is a computer based technology that facilities the sharing of ideas,
thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By
design, to social media is in internet based and gives users quick electronic
communication of content. Content include personal and information, documents, videos,
and photos. Users engage with social media via compuer table or smart phone via web-
based software or web application.
According to Brian Solis (June 28,2007) social media describes the online
technologies and practices the people use to share opinion, insights, experiences and
regards on perspectiveness.
The technological sections for educational scholarly purpose without an imperical
understanding and evaluation of the use in genders several piet falls and short coming
these danger are particularly relevant in the face of rejuvinated claims regarding the
potential of technological and scholarly innovations (Stafford and Bell 20 2012).

Through social media can increase student learning through student interactions,
challenges arise when social media are incorporated into an academic course. Arnold
and Paulus (2010) Found that even when social media is used for an educational
purpose, students incorporated the technology into their lives in a way that may differ
from the intentions of the course instructor. (Hurt etal, 2012: Patera et al, 2008). Another
reason for this may be that students who spend more time on social media may have
difficult balancing their online activities and their academic preparation. Social media can
also be a challenging instructional strategy to incorporate because it attempts to balance

through social media supports more of constructivist approach to learning, where

students and educators can work together to co-create understanding of a particular topic,
rather than an approach that emphasizes individual contributions ( Stevens, 2009). As a
result, students and educators become equal participants in the knowledge sharing
process. Though this seems beneficial for creating and disseminating knowledge, social
media can also become a primary concern.
Researchers found out that students is more likely to spend their time on social
media than study their lessons. Likewise, parents know that
Computers are important for their children’s school work, but may worry that the attraction
of social media pulls away students away from studies. The professor of University of
New Hampshire Chuck Martin, said that the students have grown up with t social media.
In this study the researchers are going to examine what are the impact of social media to
the academic performance of Grade 7- STE and Grade 7-SPJ students of Carrascal
National High School.

CHAPTER II
METHODS AND PROCEDURES

Research Design
This study is a descriptive and correlational method. This method is considered as an
descriptve method because it allows the researcher to identify the characteristics of an
observed phenomenon and collecting more information. Also it is considered as an
correlational method because it examines the relationship between two or more variables.

Locale and Population

This research is intended only for Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ students of Carrascal
National High School. There are 25 participants in Grade 7-STE and 25 participants also
in Grade 7-SPJ students. The total population of the respondents are 50.

Ethical Considerations
The researchers considered the decision of the students if they are willing to answer
the questionnaire that has been provided.

The resarchers considired the proper communication to the respondents.

The researchers considered the respondents identity.

The researchers found out that the respondents are using social media and their most
commonly use social media platform is facebook, but their grades are good, therefore
theres no relationship between using social media and the academic performance of

CHAPTER IV

Summary
This study investigate the impact of social media to the academic performance of Grade
7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ of Carrascal National High School. The descriptive and
correlational method is adopted in the study. The study has 50 respondents, the
researchers investigate if theres an impact of social media to the academic performance
of the Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ students of Carrascal National High School. The
researchers conducted a survey with a provided questionnaire to get the information that
is needed to the study. The researchers found out that facebook is the common social
media platform that the respondents commonly use.

Conclusions
The researchers conclude that theres no relationship between using social media and
to the academic performance of the Grade 7-STE and Grade 7-SPJ students. Using
social media does not affect the academic performance of the students.

Recommendation
The researchers found out that theres no relationship between using social media and
to the academic performance of the students, therefore it is ok to use social media but
you must remember that theres some limitation in using it.
