In the story Fahrenheit 451 and the Ted talk they both talk about how the government

controls people's lives, but they have a very dramatic difference on how they accomplish
censorship. In the Ted Talk it states “The reality is that even in democratic societies today, we do
not have good answers for how you balance the need for security and law enforcement on the
one hand and protection of civil liberties and free speech on the other in our digital networks”
and “when control over what people can and cannot do with information” (MacKinnon). This
shows that the government controls cyberspace to see what people see and think on the digital
world to keep society in a very “perfect” society. For example, if people can’t see bad things on
the internet then they can’t think or do it because they don’t know about it. They erase things on
the internet so they can prevent conflict. In Fahrenheit 451 it states “While books went up in
sparkling whirls” and “Don’t give them any slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie
things up with” (Bradbury 3, 61). This shows how and why they burned books. They burn books
because they don’t want conflict or problems in society and keep it peaceful. In the Ted talk the
government “burns” the internet or erases it from cyberspace and in Fahrenheit 451 they burn
books in society. This is a way they use control and censorship in society.
