Elements of Design

Molly Beckett
Elements of Design:Line
The most basic element of design. Line
establishes direction and it moves from
one line to the other. The predominate line
in the room is curved, you can tell because
of the curved chairs, the painting also has
curves in it and the table is curved. There
is also a horizontal line in the rug. The
message the lines in the room send is a
calm, cozy and soft feeling.
Elements of Design:Form/Shape
Form in interior design is an object that is 3-dimensional and a
shape is an outline that is 2-dimensional. The predominant type
in my room is geometric because of the design of the carpet and
painting, which has a lot of shapes and different colors. The
guidelines for using form are exhibited because the room’s
“form does follow function”, this goes with the furniture in my
room because the furniture is being used for what it’s intended
for. “Related forms are more agreeable than unrelated”, this
applies to my room because the furniture in the room are related
forms and not unrelated. “A gradual change in form smoothly
directs the eyes”, this applies to my room because there are not
too many forms so, my room is not confusing.
Elements of Design:Space/Mass
Space is the area around a form and
inside a form. Mass is the amount of
space taken up by the elements in the
room. My room has a low mass
because there is pretty much nothing
in it other than a bed. The room gives
a feeling of relaxation because of the
lack of cluster and also a peaceful vibe.
Elements of Design:Texture
Texture is the way a surface feels or
appears to feel. There is two types of
texture, Actual Texture and Implied
Texture. Actual Texture uses our sense
of touch. You can feel it. Implied
Texture looks as if it has a texture. It is
an illusion. The texture of my room is
Actual Texture because of the design on
the wall, you can actually touch it. The
carpet is really fuzzy and soft, which
also goes along with an Actual Texture.
Elements of Design:Color
Color can be used to express a person’s
individuality or to create a certain mood
or illusion. Color can be used in my
space to give it the mood of romance
because of the color red, which is the
color of love and romance. The table
with the candles on it give the room the
mood of love and romance. My room’s
color is a warm color space.
Elements of Design:Pattern
Pattern is the repetition of a design in
an orderly manner. Pattern is a
repeated design motif that uses several
of the elements. The type of pattern
used in my design is naturalistics
because of the leaves on the wall. That
shows that the room was inspired by
nature because of the scenery of what
the outside would look like. The colors
in the room are also inspired by nature.
