A Brief and History of Graphic Design

Graphic design is an art of combing pictures, text and ideas in advertisements, publication
or a website. In other words, it is a creative process of creating visual communications that are
anticipated to convey specific messages to the specific target audience. It includes everything that
relates to the creation of charts, graphs, signs, symbols, logos, line art and so on. Due to the
extensive and rapid growth in the exchange of information, the demand of graphic design services
sydney is greater than ever before. At its widest definition, it also comprises the entire history of
art, although painting and other aspects of the subject are more generally treated as art history.
The history of graphic design goes back to the drawings on cave walls and the decorations
on pottery in third millennium BC.C. However, the professional label ‘graphic designer’ started to
raise popularity in the early 20th century in both book design and general print design
instantaneously, making it hard to find exactly who invented the term.

Principles of Modern Typography:

In the 1920s, graphic designers started claiming several fonts, stamps, logos and
typographic techniques as their own signature styles. Jan Tschichold documented various of
generally used fonts in his book New Typography in 1928. Most of typography techniques
developed in 1920s caught on, putting the foundation for modern font typography. The
introduction of movable type by Johannes Gutenberg paved the way for the industrialisation of
graphic design when he invented a wooden printing press and the use of oil-based ink.

The Rise of Conumerism:

During the nineteenth century, the visual message design was entrusted to professionals,
the publisher and the artist. As the demand for books, magazines, movies, newspapers and
advertising increased, the importance of graphic designing became more popular in the print shops,
corporations and the entertainment world as well. Print shops required designers for everything
from books to newspapers to marketing materials, while filmmakers needed graphic designers for
cinema and later TV. However, the corporations demanded the graphic designing services for
brochures, advertisements, newsletters, signage and business logo design Manchester.
Graphic Design Schools:
With the increased demand of print and artistic graphic design, the first graphic design
school, named as Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in Germany and was rapidly followed by graphic
design schools around the world. In 1950s, logo design became a great deal for branding and the
logo designing was recognized with the identity of the corporation.

Computer-aided Graphic Design:

In the 1960s, computers introduced in the graphic design world, however, it was not until
the 1980s that the computers became the standard and essential for graphic designing. Today, most
of the graphic designers could not imagine the working without a computer. With the massive
technological development, graphic designers have the expertise and knowledge to perform their
jobs, as much of the work is assisted by digital tools.
