CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Nowadays, technology plays a big role in the society.

For past few years, technology had evolved and turns the
world from a dark place to a brighter one. It creates a lot

of gadgets that makes works easier and faster. These kinds

of innovations are what people now are living.

Electronic and Electrical technology is one of the

fastest revolutionizing technologies that affects and

change the lives of men of the world. Its contribution is

visible in homes, schools, and especially in industry.

In line with this progress and growing industrial

technologies, there is a need of greater supply of

electricity for manipulation and production of goods and

services. These lead inventors to invent a device as a

source of electricity which is known as solar panel.

Solar panels are device that convert light into

electricity. Solar panels is also known as eco-friendly

since it does not emit toxic gases into the environment.

For installing solar panels, the government approved it

because the cost is feasible for many homeowners. The cost-

saving on electrical bills and the positive effect on the

environment make solar power generators an increasing

alternative source for homes and business alike (Pigte,

et.al)
Such invention of solar panel has been improved by

researchers Pigte, Chatto, De Castro, and Lumactud. Their

research was all about a sun tracker for solar panel that

follows the direction of the sun where they found out that

it has a faster charging time than the ordinary solar panel

in terms of percentage of the change in different weather

conditions.

The acceptability of the Sun Tracker for Solar Panel

in terms of its functionality, safety and durability has

already been assessed for the Academic Year 2016-2017. But

people believe that the gadget still needs some

improvements thus the researchers conduct a follow-up

research about the acceptability level of the sun tracker

for solar panel for A.Y 2017-2018 to determine if the

gadget is still acceptable and to further gain knowledge on

how to improve the product.

Literature Background

Solar panel is a device that uses light to produce

electricity from sunlight by shining on photo voltaic solar

panels. Solar electricity is generated in a solar panel

(Boxwell,2012).
Solar panels are device that convert light into

electricity. They are called solar after the sun or “sol”

because the sun is the most powerful source of light to

use. They are called photovoltaic which means “light

electricity”. Solar cells or photovoltaic cells rely on the

photovoltaic effect to absorb the energy of the sun and

cause current to flow between two oppositely charge layers

(Bellis,2006).

This study hooked up to the Theory of Photovoltaic by

Alexander Edmund Beguered in 1839 which states that

photovoltaic effect is the creation of electric charge as

the result of exposure to light through the stimulation of

electrons in metals such as selenium or platinum as

conductors (Perret,2015).

According to the theory, light (photons) striking

certain compounds in particular metals causes the surface

of the materials to emit electrons. Light striking other

compounds causes the material to accept electrons. It is

the combination of these two compounds that can be made use

of to cause electrons to flow through a conductor, and

thereby create electricity. Photovoltaic means sunlight

converted into a flow of electrons “electricity” (Perret,

2015).

Solar panels can generate electricity without any

waste or pollution, or dependence on the earth’s natural

resources once it is constructed. Solar panels are

relatively easy to install and has a low maintenance cost.

A useful characteristic of photovoltaic power generation is

that it can be installed on any scale as opposed to

conventional forms of power generation that require large

scale plant and maintenance.

Moreover, the Philosophy of Instrumentalism by John

Dewey said that a man cannot solve the problem by his

historical thoughts and actions. He must use intelligence

as all instrument for overcoming any obstacle (Neil J.,

2009). The Philosophy of Instrumentalism relates in this

study in a way that researchers must use their brain in

finding solutions to problems. They must use their

knowledge and intelligence acquired through studying to

create a product that would benefit the society and the

country as well. This is what the group of researchers lead

by Pigte did; they used their learning that they have

acquired in studying electrical technology in designing a

gadget that would benefit the society once used.

According to Article II, Section 17 of the 1987

Philippine Constitution:

All educational institutions shall encourage critical

and creative thinking to broaden scientific and
technological knowledge and promote vocational
efficiency, the constitution provides that the state
shall give priority to education, science and
technology, arts, culture and sports to foster
patriotism and nationalism accelerate social progress
and promote total human liberation and development.

Through the development and advancement of technology,

people improved their lifestyle. Perhaps, for incoming

generation, inventors will make their own version of

gadgets to help people needs or innovate the old idea and

encourage the researchers to explore their knowledge about

the new techniques. Education is very important in

attaining knowledge that can be used in developing

technological products. Stated in the constitution, the

state shall give priority to education to promote total

human liberation and development (New Philippine

Constitution, 2010). This study is conducted as part of the

education curriculum thus, the state should support this

study for the reason that it will give priority to

education.

In addition to this, the Section 2 of the Republic Act

8293 said that:

The state recognizes that an effective
intellectual and industrial property system is vital
to the development of domestic creative activity.

Stated in the constitution, the state permits its

people to enhance their knowledge to make new

inventions that can help in the economy. This law

encourages people with innovative ideas to help the

country prosper (Arellano, 2010).

The above mentioned basic article was realized

through the construction of a newly designed gadget,

the Sun Tracker for Solar Panel which is useful in the

emergency event of power cut of or for daily needs of

people using electricity.

Hence, this study was conducted to test the

acceptability level of the Sun Tracker for Solar Power

in terms of functionality, safety, and durability to

the students before it will release to the market for

commercial use.

and durability. In terms of functionality, it has been

revealed that all of the statements has been rated “Very

Good”. This means that the gadget functions very

effectively in a way that the solar panel will follow the

direction of the sun; that the output voltage of the

inverter is accurate at 220Vand 5V DC; that the circuit

breaker will turn off if over current occurs; that the

linear actuator response to Light Dependent Resistor (LDR)

petals light; and that the device can be used easily in a

manual or automatic way. This is the reason why the sun

tracker for solar panel in terms of functionality has a

very high acceptability level to students.

In terms of safety, it has been revealed that all the

statements have been rated by the respondents with “Very

Good”. This means that the respondents believed that the

gadget ensures safety of the users by properly insulating

the terminals; installing circuit breaker for protection

against overload and short circuit; by ensuring that the

parts are insulated covered and connected properly. The

average weighted mean of 3.65, described as “Very Good”

implies that the sun tracker for solar panel has fully

attained its performance in terms of safety.

When it comes to durability, it has been revealed that

all the statements have been rated by the respondents with

“Very Good”. This means that the gadget’s durability is

fully attained as part of its effectivity in functioning.

This is made possible because the device has a protected

covering that protects it from external damage and the

parts are mounted securely with a casing that is properly

assembled. Moreover, one of its main function is to assure

that the gadget will work properly and effectively in a

longer duration of time without failure of duty has also
