Daniel 11:32b—"…but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits."
The _________________ of Knowing God
Can we know God? ______.

exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."
God _____________ that we know Him (Hosea 6:6)—"For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the
knowledge of God more than burnt offerings."
God _______________ in us when we understand and know Him (Jeremiah 9:23-24)—"Thus saith
the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might,
let not the rich man glory in his riches: [24] But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he
understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment,
and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord."
God has given us His ___________ that we might know Him (John 5:39)—"Search the scriptures; for
in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."
God sent His __________ that we might know God (1 John 5:20)—"And we know that the Son of God
is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in
him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life."
John 8:19—"Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know
me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also."

for ever. Amen."
The _______________ of Knowing God
We can know God like a ________ knows his _____________.
We can know God like a ________ knows her _____________.
We can know God like a ___________ knows his _________.
We can know God like a _________ knows its ______________.
The _______________ in Knowing God. There are several problems man has when it comes to knowing God.
God's _________ and _______________ are above ours (Isaiah 55:8-9)—"For my thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. [9] For as the heavens are higher than the
earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Man is _______________ from God by sin (Isaiah 59:1-2)—"Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it
cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: [2] But your iniquities have separated between
you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear."
The _______________ man (unsaved man) cannot understand the things of God (1 Cor. 2:14)—"But the
natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can
he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (read verses 11-14)
Satan has _____________ men's minds to keep them from knowing God (2 Cor. 4:4-6)—"In whom the god of
this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of
Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. [5] For we preach not ourselves, but Christ
Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. [6] For God, who commanded the light to
shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in
the face of Jesus Christ."
God is ____________ (John 4:24)"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in
truth."
The ________________to Knowing God. Based on the pictures the Bible gives of how we can know God, we
need to do the following:
We must become a __________ of God.
We must become part of the __________ of Christ.
We must become a _____________ in His kingdom.
We must become one of His ___________.
How do we do this? By receiving Jesus Christ as our Saviour, thereby entering into a new relationship
with God.
V. The ____________ Of Knowing God. How can we know God?
We must ____________ to know God. Note the desire of the two following men:
__________ (Psalm 63:1)—"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my
flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is."
__________ (Philippians 3:8, 10)—"Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the
knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but
dung, that I may win Christ. [10] That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the
fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death."
We must enter into a __________________ with God through Jesus Christ.
_______ must be removed from our lives (Isa. 59:1-2)—"Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it
cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you
and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.".
We must __________ His commandments (John 14:21)—"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth
them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and
will manifest myself to him."
We must make the __________ to know God. David said, "early will I seek thee" (Psa. 63:1) and "My soul
followeth hard after thee" (Psa. 63:8). Read Prov. 2:1-5.
We must ____________ on God (Psalm 63:6)—"When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee
in the night watches."
We must spend _________ with God.
VI. The ________________ of Knowing God
_____________ _______ (John 17:3)—"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."

to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and
fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses."
____________ (Daniel 9:4)—"And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord,
the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that
keep his commandments;" (also read verses 7, 9, 14)
____________ (Psalm 145:3, 8-9)—"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is
unsearchable. [8] The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. [9] The
Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works."
________________ (2 Peter 1:3)—"According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain
unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:"
________________ (1 John 2:3-4)—"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his
commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is
not in him."
Practice ____________________ (1 John 2:29)—"If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that
doeth righteousness is born of him." "A right conception of God is basic not only to systematic theology
but to practical Christian living as well." (A.W. Tozer)
____________ to God's Word from God's messengers (1 John 4:6)—"We are of God: he that knoweth God

VII. _____________ to Watch Out For
A person can know a gread deal __________ God without much knowledge of Him.
A person can know a gread deal about ________________ without much knowledge of God. We can know all

for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee…" (see verse 1)

beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth

other. Some thirty times Isaiah referred to God as "the Holy One."
God's holiness is equivalent to His __________________ (compare Amos 6:8 and 4:2 where God's holiness is
equated with Himself). Amos 6:8—"The Lord God hath sworn by himself… [4:2] The Lord God hath sworn
by his holiness…" Holiness is attributed to all three persons of the Trinity (Isa. 41:14; Acts 3:14; Eph.
4:30).
Because He is holy, God __________ all sin (Psalm 5:4-5)—"For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in

refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:" "One of two things causes a man to change his mind
and reverse his plans: want of foresight to anticipate eveything, or lack of power to execute them. But as
God is both omniscienct and omnipotent there is never any need for Him to revise His decrees" (A.W.
Pink).

God's _____ does not change. Hebrews 13:8—"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for
ever."

Since God does not change, He is compared to a_________. Deut. 32:4—"He is the Rock, his work is
perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."

The truth that God does not change is ____________ with the fact that man and creation do change.

God does not lie or _________ his mind like man does. 1 Samuel 15:29—"And also the Strength of Israel
will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent." Numbers 23:19—"God is not a man,
that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or

Heaven and earth shall __________, but God will not change. Psalm 102:26-27—"Of old hast thou laid
the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. [26] They shall perish, but thou
shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and
they shall be changed: [27] But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end."

God's Word will last forever, in contrast to man, who will perish like the _______. Isaiah 40:6-8—"The
voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the
flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon
it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand
for ever."

Man can be changed in basically three ways: from better to worse, from worse to better, and from
immaturity to maturity. God is perfect. He does not need to change and cannot change.
Man can be changed to be like the_________ __________ _________. 2 Cor. 3:18—"But we all, with
open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to
glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
How should the truth of God's unchangeableness __________ us?

We cannot _______ on man, but we can _______ on God. Psalm 118:8—"It is better to trust in the Lord
than to put confidence in man."

We should be ____________ by the fact that God does not change. Hebrews 6:18—"That by two
immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who
have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:"

We should be encouraged to _________ since God's promises and His will have not changed. Jeremiah
33:3—"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou
knowest not." 1 John 5:14—"And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing
according to his will, he heareth us:"

We should seek to be ________ because God still hates and punishes sin. 1 Peter 1:15-16—"But as he
which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16] Because it is written, Be
ye holy; for I am holy."

THE MAJESTY OF GOD

Psalm 145:5—"I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works."

God is ________ (Psalm 48:1)—"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the
mountain of his holiness." Psalm 95:3—"For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all
gods."
"Majesty" means "greatness" and "_______________."

God's majesty is ______________ (Isaiah 2:10)—"Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear
of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty." (cf. 2:19, 21)

God is called El Shaddai—God _____________ (Genesis 17:1)—"And when Abram was ninety years old
and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and
be thou perfect."

God's ___________ is great (Deut. 10:17)—"For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a
great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:"

God's _________are great (Judges 2:7)—"And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all
the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for
Israel."

unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead."

God's __________ is great (2 Chron. 34:21)—"… for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out
upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do after all that is written in this
book.

God's glory and ____________ are great (Psalm 21:5)—"His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and
majesty hast thou laid upon him."

The ____________ God gives over the enemy is great (2 Samuel 23:10)—"He arose, and smote the
Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the Lord wrought a great
victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil." (cf. 23:12)

How can we ________ a right idea of God's greatness? The Bible teaches us two steps we must take.

First, we must remove from our thoughts of God _________ that would make Him small.

In Psalm 139, the psalmist meditates on the infinite and ________________ nature of God's presence,
and knowledge, and power, in relation to men.

There are no limits to God's ______________ of me (139:1-6).

There are no limits to God's _____________with me (139:7-10).

There are no limits to God's ___________as revealed in making me (139:14)—"I will praise thee; for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well."

God revealed to _________ His unlimited wisdom, power, and presence (Job 38-41).
Elihu told Job, "with God is terrible majesty. Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is
____________ in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict" (Job 37:22b-23).

God challenged Job to match God's __________ (Job 40:9-10)—"Hast thou an arm like God? or canst
thou thunder with a voice like him? [10] Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself
with glory and beauty."

Second, we must compare Him with powers and forces which we regard as great (Isa. 40:12ff).

Look at the great _________ which God has done (Isaiah 40:12)—"Who hath measured the waters in
the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth
in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?"

Look at the great ___________ and compare them with God who is much greater (Isaiah 40:15)
—"Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance:
behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing."

Look at the _________ and compare it with God who is much greater (Isaiah 40:22)—"It is he that
sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out
the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:"

Look at the world's great ________ and compare them God who is much greater (Isaiah 40:23)—"That
bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity."

Look at the _______ and see that God who created them is greater (Isaiah 40:26)—"Lift up your eyes on
high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them
all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth."

How does Isaiah then __________ to us the doctrine of God's majesty?

He rebukes our wrong ____________ about God (Isaiah 40:25)—"To whom then will ye liken me, or
shall I be equal? saith the Holy One." Luther told Erasmus, "Your thoughts of God are too human."
Because we ourselves are limited and weak, we imagine that at some points God is too, and find it hard
to believe that He is not. We think of God as too much like we are.

He rebukes our wrong thoughts about ____________ (Isaiah 40:27)—"Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and
speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?"

He rebukes our _____________ to believe in God's majesty (Isaiah 40:28)—"Hast thou not known? hast
thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not,
neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding." After these rebukes, note what Isaiah says
in the last verse of the chapter, "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall
mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
(Isaiah 40:31)

How should we ___________ to God's greatness? Deuteronomy 10:12-11:9 gives us several ways:
The key verse is verse 17, which gives the reason for the responses that God expects from us—"For
the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which
regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:"

We should ________ the Lord (10:12)—"And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee,
but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with
all thy heart and with all thy soul,"

We should _________ the Lord (10:12, 13; 11:1, 8). Deut. 11:1—"Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy
God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway. [8]
Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that ye may be strong,
and go in and possess the land, whither ye go to possess it."

We should _________ the Lord (10:12; 11:1).

We should _________ the Lord (10:12, 20). Deut. 10:20—"Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God; him shalt
thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name."

We should _______________ our hearts and not be stubborn (10:16)—"Circumcise therefore the
foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked."

We should ___________to the Lord (10:20).

We should _______ to Him because nothing is too hard for Him. Note the following men who were
encouraged in prayer by God's greatness.

____________ (Neh. 1:5; 4:14)—"And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible
God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: [4:14]
And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be
not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your
sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses."

___________ (Dan. 9:4)—"And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O
Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them
that keep his commandments."

________________(Hab. 3). As he prays asking God to revive His work in Jerusalem, he speaks of God's
majesty (3:3), His omnipotence (3:4-6), and God's power in judgment and salvation (3:12-13). His
comtemplation of God's majesty resluted in rejoicing and trust in his heart during the dark hours of the
nation (Habakkuk 3:18-19)—"Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. [19] The
Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon
mine high places…"
