CLO – 3 PLO – 2 C–3

PLO 1: Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science,

engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering
problems.
CLO 3: Apply the mathematical and Engineering knowledge to Solve the mathematical problems
related to ideal gas mixtures, combustion, air compressors and steam turbines.

Instruction: Write the unit with each quantity that is to be determined.

Question# 01: (CLO-3, PLO-2, C-3) [10]

A mixture of gases consists of 0.3 kg of Oxygen, 0.6 kg of Carbon dioxide, and 0.2 kg of Helium
𝑘𝑔 𝑘𝑔 𝑘𝑔
The molar masses are given 𝑚
̃ 𝐶𝑂2 = 44 𝑘𝑚𝑜𝑙 , 𝑚
̃ 𝑂2 = 32 𝑘𝑚𝑜𝑙 , 𝑚
̃ 𝐻𝑒 = 4.0 𝑘𝑚𝑜𝑙. This mixture is
maintained at 80 𝑘𝑃𝑎 and 29℃.
Determine the following:
1. Molar mass of this mixture, [2.5]
2. The volume occupied by the mixture. [2.5]
3. Volume of the oxygen in the mixture. [2.5]
4. Partial pressure of the Carbon dioxide. [2.5]

Question # 02: (CLO-3, PLO-2, C-3) [20]

A gas mixture of 50 𝑘𝑚𝑜𝑙 is contained in a vessel having the molar masses as follows:
𝑘𝑔 𝑘𝑔 𝑘𝑔
𝑚
̃ 𝐶𝑂2 = 44 𝑘𝑚𝑜𝑙 , 𝑚
̃ 𝑂2 = 32 𝑘𝑚𝑜𝑙 , 𝑚
̃ 𝑁2 = 28 𝑘𝑚𝑜𝑙 .

The partial pressures of Oxygen and Nitrogen are 30 𝑘𝑃𝑎, 50 𝑘𝑃𝑎 respectively. The volumetric
analysis of the gas shows the distribution of 30% Oxygen and 50% Nitrogen.
Determine the following:
1. Partial pressure and mass of carbon dioxide present in the mixture. [2+2]
2. The total pressure, mass of the mixture and molar mass of the mixture. [1+1+1]
3. The Specific heat capacity at constant volume and Specific gas constant of
the mixture. When the constant volume specific heats of the gases at 300 𝐾 are:
[2.5+2.5]
𝐾𝐽 𝐾𝐽 𝐾𝐽
𝐶𝑣𝐶𝑂2 = 0.657 𝐾𝑔𝐾 , 𝐶𝑣𝑜2 = 0.658 𝐾𝑔𝐾 , 𝐶𝑣𝑁2 = 0.743 𝐾𝑔𝐾
4. The Specific heat capacity at constant pressure and specific heat ratio for
the mixture. [2.5+2.5]
5. The Specific volume of the mixture in the vessel when the temperature is 27℃ . [3]
