SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION ENGINEERING

ABSTRACT

Conservation of soil and water resources is very important for sustainability of

agriculture and environment. Soil and water resources are now in danger of being rapidly

depleted due to increasing demand and population. One of the major factors is the

occurrence of soil erosion. Soil erosion is the removal of soil due to the movement of air/

water or any unnatural event. Most of our water sources are also depleted due to climate

change. That is why to have a sustainable agricultural environment, soil and water

conservation management must be utilized.

The Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering students taking AENG 100 – Soil

and Water Conservation Engineering designed a model with Erosion Control Structures and

Water Conservation Structures. On one side, it consists of a steep hill that has terraces to

prevent increased erosion as well as the different types of erosion from sheet, rill and gully

erosion that will occur without the control structure. On the other side, it consists of water

regulating structures starting from the spillway that carries the water down to the rectangular

inclined drop and vertical drop with the association of energy dissipaters to lessen the impact

of flowing water to the soil. A diversion channel is also constructed to divert the water from

the reservoir to the main irrigation canal to be distributed to the fields.
