Group members:

TITLE: “More Drops Make Darker” topic: Concentration of solutions

OBJECTIVE:

After this science activity I can show understanding of concentration of solutions by

differentiating a solution from different amounts of solutes and solvents through solution
preparation from common materials.

MATERIALS:

Food coloring, 4 beakers, markers, water

PROCEDURE:

1. label the Erlenmeyer flask or beakers with numbers 1 -4. place one drop of food color in #1, add 50
ml to the food color in #1and stir. place 10 drops in #2. add 50 ml to the food color in #2 and stir.
differentiate the two bottles
2. place one drop of food coloring in bottle 3, add 20 ml water and stir, place 1 drop of water in a 100
ml water,
4. Express the concentration of dilute (unsaturated) saturated and super saturated solutions using
this model below. show the particles for their solute and solvent
MODELS for the different concentration of solutions

UNSATURATED SATURATED SUPERSATURATED

QUESTIONS:

1) what have you observed in this activityp?

2) What will happen if you add more solute to an unsaturated solution?
3) if it was oil and water you have mixed, what will happen to the mixture?
4) what type of solution did you make?
5) what are other ways to express concentration of solutions?
6) how does the amount of water and food coloring affect the solution?
7) what solution has the least amount of solute? solvent?
8) what was frequently changed in the procedure that affects the color of the mixture? what
remained the same?
9) what are the variables in this experiment? (controlled, independent, dependent)
10) which preparation is concentrated? diluted?

Beaker Water (ml) Food color

1 50 1 drop
2 50 10 drops
3 20 1 drop
4 100 1 drop
