Açores is a group of volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Portugal, in Portuguese
possession but partially autonomous. The economic capital is Ponta Delgada and it’s the
largest municipality of Açores.

Gonçalo Velho Cabral was the explorer credited with the re-discovery of the islands of Santa
Maria and São Miguel. But, in first place was discovered in 1427 by Diogo Silves and settled by
portugueses in the beginning of 15th Century. Later, the communities of Moors, Jews and some
foreigners, namely French and English, arrived there.

Ponta Delgada is located on São Miguel, the largest island and most populous in the
archipelago, has been populated since 1444. Part of Gateways of the Sea, the marina includes
a cruise ships and expanding port for ships and mega-yatchs. The marina is also known for its
pools, including a big natural pool. We can also see Forte de São Brás, a 1552 fortress, guards
the western end of the port, a relic of the constant threat of pirate raids.

Monumento do Emigrante Açoreano is other relic of the Island of São Miguel we can admire,
the statue is a tribute to the Azorean people that emigrated, the bronze monument points
hopeful to the west. An important structure is also Portas da Cidade, the gates of Ponta
Delgada made from regional volcanic stone, that appear in city coat of arms and part of old
defenses of the city, and dates to 1783.

Regarding religious tourist attractions we can find a number of churches with a very rich
aesthetic level. But the one that stands out the most is Igreja São Sebastião, founded in 1553,
originally as a small chapel, constructed from black basalt stone with an exquisite baroque
style and a clock tower added in 18th century.

Continuing on the path of demonstration of various points of interest, Museu Carlos Machado,
it's one of the fabulous attractions that attracts a lot of tourists. This structure reflects the
scientific mentality by naturalists of the 19th century on oceanographic expeditions.

We can also find a statue of a very important figure for the region in honor of José do Canto, a
gardener and botanist of agricultural technologies and species in the Açores that presents us
with a botanical garden full of splendor and plant diversity. He is so important, because
established contacts with botanical gardens and nurseries from around the world, from he
bought, sold or exchanged plants.

On the other hand, we can find unique natural resources in the region, such as Ponta da
Ferraria, whereupon we can found hot springs fed by a set of hydrothermal vents in the ocean.
A thermal pool of cold Atlantic water mixing with the natural heat of the shoreline´s volcanic
fissure. The warm water is also diverted to feed the private pools at the nearby Termas da
Ferraria, used since the 15th century as a spa and bathing site with therapeutic waters.

Undoubtedly the tourist attraction that most people seduce is the Lagoa das Sete Cidades. A
view of Eden in the Açores. Still being a simple lagoon in a crater of a sleeping volcano
enchants with its divine elements. With 5 kms in length, 2 kms wide and roughly 12 kms in
circumference the extension of Lagoa das Sete Cidades show us the beauty of the island. The
village of Sete Cidades on the crafter floor can be reached by crossing the road bridge that
divides the two lakes in Lagoa das Sete Cidades. One is called Blue Lake and the other Green
Lake. Furnas e Caldeiras are part of the volcanic and gastronomic panorama of the city. The
valley´s typical smell of sulphur and the boiling, smoking hot springs are evidence of volcanic
activity, also place used for cooking food.

DAY 1

Ponta Delgada - Covoada - Lagoa das Empadadas - Lagoa do Canário - Vista do Rei - Sete
Cidades - Ferraria - Ponta Delgada

On the first day see the left part of the island. Follow Ponta Delgada towards Sete Cidades, but
by the road that goes through Covoada. This is the only way to go to the Canary Lagoon and
Empadadas.

After seeing these 2 lakes and the Lagoa do Canário viewpoint, continue to Vista do Rei, where
you have a stunning view of the Lagoa das Sete Cidades. In this place there is also the
abandoned hotel Monte Palace. You can come in and imagine what this hotel would be like.
Climbing to the hotel's terrace gives you
unique views of the lake.

Then get down to Sete Cidades and have

lunch at the Green Love snackbar, right on
the shore of the Lagoa Azul. The food and
service are not the best, but what counts is
the place.

At the end of lunch go around the Lagoa Azul (the

largest). Walking by the water, listening to nature is
indescribable.

Leave Sete Cidades towards Ferraria, where you can

take a bath in the sea with hot water. At the end return to Ponta Delgada and, if you still have
time, take a walk around the city.
