ADOBE PDF PRESET

AND
PAGE EXPORTER UTILITY JAVASCRIPT
INSTALLATION AND USAGE:
[Note: Screen shots are created using an Apple® MacBook® Pro. Screen shots will be slightly different for Windows® users.]

DESCRIPTION
The Page Exporter Utility (PEU) JavaScript allows users of Adobe’s® InDesign® CS3 up to and including
Creative Cloud to create single page PDF files using either a Macintosh® or Windows® computer. Without
this JavaScript, one needs to use third party software, plug-in, or manually create single page PDF files. The
PEU JavaScript allows all pages to be created with a single execution from the InDesign® document. This
process allows PDF files to be created much more efficiently.
The supplied DSC_Export_PDFx-1a-2001.joboptions file allows one to create viable PDF files that
meet the ISO standard for PDF/X-1a:2001. PDF/X-1a:2001 files are regular PDF version 1.3 which addresses
the following items.
• All fonts must be embedded.
• All color information must be CMYK, grayscale or named spot colors.
• RGB colors and/or ICC color profiles are not allowed.
• OPI is not allowed.
• Encryption cannot be used.
• Transparencies are not allowed.

INSTALLATION
Upon receipt of the .zip file, uncompress and place the folder on your DESKTOP. The folder should contain
the following items…

Place the folder named PDF FILES GO HERE on the top level of your DESKTOP. This folder is the
default location into which the PDFs are placed as they are exported from InDesign. These are the final files
to be uploaded to InSite at the DSC.
LOADING ADOBE® PDF PRESET
Start InDesign®
Select from the menu FILE > ADOBE PDF PRESETS > DEFINE…

The ADOBE PDF PRESETS window opens.

Click the LOAD button. The FINDER (Macintosh) or EXPLORER (Windows) window will open.

FINDER (Macintosh) or REVEAL IN EXPLORER (Windows) from the drop menu.

The window below will need to be open every time PDF files are ready to be Exported.
Again, select from the InDesign® menu WINDOW > AUTOMATION > SCRIPTS
(Or, populate the Script tab into the vertical palette of additional tools.)

EXECUTING PAGE EXPORTER UTILITY JAVASCRIPT

When the InDesign® document is finished and PDF files are ready to be created, double-click the JavaScript
file in the Script list named PageExporterUtility5.0.1.jsx. (The file above it is the preference file. It is grayed
out and is not executable.) The following window appears.

Explanation of the items in the above window:

RED ellipse: By default, the PEU JavaScript enters the opened InDesign® document’s name here. The
information in this field will automatically be placed in the name of the PDF file. Change the text here as
needed. In this screen grab, the PDF files created will have “Test” in the file name. The folio of the page is
derived from the information that is used in the Pages window. (See screen grab on next page.)
If the page range of the InDesign® document is 11-19 (as in the screen grab above), PEU will create PDF
files that will be named as follows:

011_Test.pdf 014_Test.pdf 017_Test.pdf

012_Test.pdf 015_Test.pdf 018_Test.pdf
013_Test.pdf 016_Test.pdf 019_Test.pdf

BLUE ellipse. By default, PEU will create PDF files for ALL pages in the opened InDesign® document.
PEU allows several variations of page ranges to be Exported. Exports from the page before the dash to the page
indicated after the dash (i.e. “1-3” or “4-4”). PEU also allows non-contiguous pages to be Exported (i.e.
“3,5,8,12” or “2-4,7,9-12”). This feature is useful when a single, or range, of revised PDF files are needed.
This feature would need to be utilized if a single revised file were to be made from several pages.

GREEN ellipse. The PEU JavaScript preferences have already been modified to point to the PDF FILES GO
HERE folder located on the Desktop of your computer. This is the location where PEU will place all PDF files
as they are Exported.

Once the Base Name and the Pages to be Exported are complete, click the OK button. The next window
appears. Make the selection from the drop menu as seen below and click the OK button. This selection will
only need to be made once. When using PEU again, the preset below will already be selected.
The PEU JavaScript is now being executed and single page PDF files are being created. Once the
JavaScript has finished Exporting the selected pages in to PDF files the following message window appears.

Proceed to the PDF FILES GO HERE folder and you will find the PDF files that have been created.

PDF files are now ready to be delivered to the Digital Solution Center.
