HOW TO ASSEMBLE A GYROSCOPE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

A gyroscope is a device consists of a wheel or disk mounted so that it spins rapidly about

an axis to provide a reference direction mainly in navigation system, stabilizers, and automatic

pilots.

2.0 REQUIRED TOOLS

Specific tools are required to assemble this gyroscope for MECH 311 Lab. The tools are:

1. Press Fit Machine

2. Wrench

3. Pop Rivet Gun

3.0 STEPS

1. The Gyroscope Shaft (Part #31101-Gyroscope Shaft) is aligned with the Gyroscope

Rotor (Part #31102-Gyroscope Rotor).

2. The shaft and the rotor are pressed together using a Press Fit Machine.

3. The rotor-shaft assembly is aligned with the Gyroscope frame (Part #MECH 311

Frame), where the shaft’s axis is the same as the threaded holes in the frame.
4. The Upper and Lower guide screws (Part #Lower Shaft Guide 91375A199 and Part

#Upper Shaft Guide 91375A199) are screwed into the threaded holes of the frame by

hand. The screws should hold the rotor-shaft assembly in place.

5. Two nuts (2x Part #92671A009) are fastened into the guide screws to secure the

rotor-shaft by using hand to lightly tighten it.

6. Adjust the guide screw depth on both sides to provide a decent fit to allow the rotor-

shaft assembly spins smoothly while not restraining its movement. Use a Wrench to

tighten both nuts.

7. Align the Ring Assembly (Part #Ring) to match the slots on the sides of the frame.

8. Slide the ring assembly into the slots on the sides of the frame with the holes aligned

to the holes on the sides of the frame.

9. Align and slide two Rivets (Part #94439A270) into the hole of the ring assembly.
10. Using a Pop Rivet Gun, pop both rivets into the assembly holding the ring and the

frame together.

11. The assembly is done.
