Cambridge ESOL has developed the online version of BULATS
in response to demand for a robust and reliable Business
English language test with the flexibility to be taken at
companies’ own offices at times that suit their needs.
BULATS results are available immediately which helps
organisations make timely decisions about candidates for
recruitment, promotion or international placement.
The BULATS Online Test is more than just a set of questions;
it exploits the latest developments in language testing
technology to provide a fast, fully functional, 'stand-alone'
method of assessing language ability. Each language option
(English, French, German, Spanish) is available online,
allowing users to purchase only those languages which are of
most relevance to their employees.
How does the Online Test work?
The Online Test pinpoints ability quickly and accurately by
using 'adaptive' testing techniques. As a candidate
progresses through the test the computer selects each
question on the basis of the previous answer. As a result, the
test becomes progressively easier or more difficult until a
consistent level of ability is achieved, usually in about 60
minutes.
Technical support
The Online test can be taken at any computer which has a
sound card and is accessed by Internet Explorer. To be able
to run BULATS Online on your computer a few technical
specifications need to be met. Details of these specifications

BULATS Test Results / How are the Results reported?
The Computer and the Online Test
The BULATS Computer and the BULATS Online Test produce
a report with the candidate's overall score (on a scale of 0 -
100) and level (on the ALTE level system of 0 - 5), and their
score on each section of the test. The Test Report Form can
be printed from the administrator's programme. Reports can
be printed onto specially prepared BULATS report paper in
any of the four test languages.
The Standard Test
The exact format of your test result is decided by the
organisation delivering the test. Normally candidates receive
a Test Report, which includes their overall score and level
and their score on each section. On the reverse of the report
there is a summary of the ALTE Can Do statements.

The Speaking Test
Candidates receive a Test Report, which gives an assessment
of their overall ability (on the ALTE level system of 0 - 5) with
finer distinctions of +, - and =. A description of what the
candidate is likely to be able to do in the language in the
workplace (e.g. 'can deal with clients by responding to simple
questions') can be printed on the reverse of the Test Report.
The Writing Test
Candidates receive a Test Report similar to the one for the
Speaking Test.
