About the Institute:
IIT Bhilai is one of the six youngest IITs and is located in the state of Chhattisgarh. The institute was inaugurated
in August, 2016 and started with four-year B.Tech. programs in three branches, viz. Computer Science and
Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with intake of 40 students in each. The second
undergraduate batch will begin in July 2017 with same three branches, having the same strength (i.e. 40
students in each branch).
Permanent Campus:
The permanent campus is located in Bhilai, Durg in Chhattisgarh. The campus is adjacent to one of the largest
steel plant of India ‘Bhilai Steel Plant’ under Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). IIT Bhilai Campus will be
constructed on a land area of about 432 acres at Kutelabhatha and Sirsa Khurd villages of Durg district. This
location is about 6 km from the Durg Junction railway station and about 54 km from the Raipur Airport. In
addition to this campus, another Extension Center is also planned at Naya Raipur.
Present Transit Campus:
Institute is currently functioning temporarily at the campus of Government Engineering College (GEC), Raipur, till
the infrastructure of IIT Bhilai permanent campus is ready. Four storied Block-B of GEC Raipur building has been
furnished for IIT Bhilai, apart from the Boys and Girls hostels.
Raipur is a capital city of Chhattisgarh and is well connected by Air, Train and Roads.

§ Train: The present transit campus is about 13 km from Raipur junction railway station.
Bus: The present transit campus is about 12 km from Pandri main Bus Terminal, Raipur.

Academic Structure:
IIT Bhilai is currently offering a 4-Years B.Tech. degree program in three disciplines:

1) Computer Science and Engineering,


2) Electrical Engineering and
3) Mechanical Engineering.
Each of these departments will have an intake of 40 students, i.e. total 120 students will be admitted to IIT Bhilai
in the coming session, July 2017, through ‘JEE Advance 2017’. The B.Tech. program consists of eight semesters
spread over four years. An Academic Year (July-April) consists of 2 semesters, each of approximately 16 weeks
duration. The first semester begins in the last week of July / first week of August and ends by the last week of
November. The second semester starts in the first week of January and ends by the first week of May. A student
is required to register the relevant courses listed in the curriculum for that semester.
IIT Bhilai provides a very unique structure of fractal academics wherein students are engaged with advanced
topic early in their curriculum without increase in any academic load. The students have benefited a lot through
such structure. This structure provides a natural mechanism for students to indulge in small and large projects
along with the courses.
B. Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering
The 4-year B. Tech. program in the dept. of CSE is concerned with theoretical and practical aspects of
computing. The foundations of computing include algorithms and their analyses, data structures and their uses in
software, theory of automata, formal languages and theory of computation. The engineering aspects include
various topics in systems such as architectures of computers, programming languages, compiler design,
operating systems, design of databases, computer networks and application software. The program includes a
choice of advanced elective courses in each of the above-mentioned topics, as well as in areas such as machine
learning, computer vision, big-data analytics, wireless networks and mobile computing. The program also has a
provision to credit courses from other disciplines of science, engineering, and humanities. B.Tech. projects
provide ample opportunities for students to indulge in research activities.

B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering


The department offers four years Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) program. The eight semester curriculum
comprises of core courses, department elective courses, free electives, seminars, experiments in laboratory,
projects and humanities courses. The program offers flexibility so that the students can undertake elective
courses that provide exposure in various disciplines of EE such as Communications, Signal Processing,
Microelectronics, VLSI design, Power Electronics, Power System, Control System and Embedded Systems. The
undergraduate students can also undertake various research themes through B.Tech. project.

B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering


Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of engineering disciplines. Founded on classical subjects like Mechanics,
Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics and Strength of Materials, the field gives entry
into the design, analysis and manufacturing of automobiles, aircraft, locomotives, ships, power-plants, and also
inter-disciplinary areas like energy and environment, earth and planetary sciences, nuclear, fusion, solar, wind
and alternate energy.

Students from all engineering department of IIT Bhilai have opportunity to learn about various courses in
Humanities, Economics, Design and Creative Arts. Students have shown very high talent in such areas and have
exhibited their projects and art works

Rules For Change Branch:


B.Tech students are eligible to apply for change of branch after completing first semester.
Branch Change guidelines:
· Branch change is effected at the end of the first semester
· The branch change option is given based on the grade point average at the end of the first semester of
all those who seek branch change
· In case of a tie, the person with a better JEE (Adv.) rank will be given allotment
· Each dept. can take 10% of new students from branch change. Not more than 20% students can move
to another department under branch change
Once the allotment is made, there is no possibility of a further change either to a new branch or to the original
branch.

Faculty:
IIT Bhilai has scheduled to recruit the faculty members at various departments and expected to recruit highest
quality faculty members in due course of time. Currently faculty members from IIT Hyderabad have been
supporting IIT Bhilai to run the academic programs, such as through conducting classes and laboratory work at
IIT Bhilai and the same will continue in coming academic year too. There will be a Faculty Advisor in each
Department for every batch of the program, who will provide academic support and advice to the students on all
academic matters.
IIT Bhilai shall also be collaborating with other IITs and various other institutes in the world and shall be recruiting
visiting faculty members as a short term arrangement.

Facilities:
Students will be provided all the necessary infrastructure facilities, like library, computing, networking,
workshops, teaching laboratories and research laboratories. IIT Bhilai is a residential campus, with well
facilitated students’ hostels. All hostels are equipped with extracurricular activities, sports, recreation rooms, TV
room, washing machines, dining etc. Hostels are equipped with Wi-Fi access which provides the students to
remain connected for their academics and related activities. The institute has a good sports ground.

The institute has set up a unique do-it-yourself (DIY) lab and digital fabrication lab with 3-d printers and micro-
machining. Students are encouraged to do interesting prototyping and learn through hand-on experiences.

Students involve in numerous sports to enable them maintain their physical fitness and develop team spirit.

· Girls Hostel: Girls hostel of about 40 capacity is available in the institute campus.
· Boys Hostel: Boys hostel of about 240 capacity is available in the institute campus.

Academic blocks as well as hostels have security personnel round the clock. Medical facilities are available
through a doctor who visits the campus regularly and through full time para-medic in the campus. Very good
hospitals are situated close by to the campus and round-the-clock ambulance facility is also available in the
campus.

Student Life at Institute:


Student Gymkhana, a general body of student representatives has been set up. The students lead a very active

life in spheres of cultural activities, sports activities, science and technology activities, social activities, National
Service Scheme (NSS), National Sports Organization (NSO). The student life at IIT Bhilai is very eventful.
Several student club activities are also instituted at the hostels which include dance club, music club, epsilon
club, photography club etc. Students have taken part in many activities in and around Raipur and in inter-IIT
programs. Students have taken part in all activities of the institute with zeal.
