BOTTLE STOPPERS Material: Your choice of wood Size of turning blank—1% x 1% x 2 CA glue Sand paper Steel wool **** Spray on lacquer Finish—rub on poly Tools: 11/32 drill bit 3/8 -16TPI tap Calipers Drill or drill press Drill chuck with locking rod Stopper mandrel with washer Turning tools—roughing gouge, spindle gouge, etc (as needed) Directions: Drill a 11/32 Dia hole x 3/4 deep in the end of your blank. Tap the hole with a 3/8-16 TPI tap. Mount and secure your drill chuck in the lathe head stock. Assemble you mandrel in the chuck. Place the sizing washer on the mandrel. Screw your threaded blank on the mandrel. Turn the blank to your desired shape. Finishing: 1. Sand your turned piece to at least 400 grit. 2. Wipe dust from turned piece. 3. Spray the turned piece with lacquer, and after drying, rub with 0000 steel wool and then wipe with tack cloth. 4. Apply “wipe on poly” to the turning. Let dry for about 8 hours. Then rub with 0000 steel wool and clean with tack cloth. Page 1 of 2 BOTTLE STOPPERS 5. Repeat step number 4. 6. Repeat step number 5. 7, Place CA glue into the tapped hole of the turning and then screw the turning on to the metal bottle stopper. 8. Add any other decoration to the turning.
