Perceptual Thinking Style

 Related to human perception of the world.

 Establishing new understanding of the world or altering an existing one, through the
ayah in the Quran.

 Terms to look out for in determining if the ayah is talking in this perceptual thinking

o meaning “you think it”

 Examples in the Quran:

o
Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you
hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for
you. And Allah Knows, while you know not. (Al-Baqarah: 216)

o
Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it
bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what
[punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the
greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment. (Al-Nur: 11)
Conceptual Thinking Style

 Divided into two categories namely, Conceptual Expansion and Conceptual Combination

Conceptual Expansion
 Refers to the expanding the meaning of word or sentence to accommodate the Islamic
way of thinking.

 Example is the word directly translated to fasting, literally means to refrain from
something. Islam gave it an expanded meaning to refrain from eating, drinking, and
sexual intercourse from sunrise till sunset.

Conceptual Combination
 Refers to the combination of two concepts thats seems to have no connection,
together to produce a new idea or meaning where a non-existent concept is brought
into being.

 Examples in the Quran:

o
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.
(Al-Imran: 103)
Rope of Allah here actually means the bonds to Allah meaning Allah urges all
Muslims to hold fast to Islam or the Quran.

o
It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your
wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for
them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves,... (Al-Baqarah: 187)
This verse symbolises the relationship between spouses should be based on
love, appreciation, support, and protection for one another.

humankind.

 This inspiration need to be forged with reason, intellect, and in the right path so as not
to be led astray.

 Terms to look out for in determining if the ayah is talking in this thinking style:

o meaning “He inspired it”

o meaning “to see” / “to understand”

 Examples in the Quran:

o
So you will see and they will see. (Al-Qalam: 5)

indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging
clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed - that We may show
you. And We settle in the wombs whom We will for a specified term, then We
bring you out as a child, and then [We develop you] that you may reach your
[time of] maturity. And among you is he who is ... (Al-Hajj: 5)
Wishful Thinking Style

 Defined simply as holding wishes that are impossible to come true.

 Terms to look out for in determining if the ayah is talking in this thinking style:

o meaning “they wish”

 Examples in the Quran:

o
That Day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish they
could be covered by the earth. And they will not conceal from Allah a [single]
statement. (An-Nisa: 42)

o
And spend [in the way of Allah ] from what We have provided you before death
approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a
brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."
(Al-Munafiqun: 10)
This ayah shows a person wishing to be born back for regretting the way they
lived their lives and wanted to make supplication by giving charity. It is surely an
impossible wish.

o
And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than
those who associate others with Allah . One of them wishes that he could be
granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the
[coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what
they do. (Al-Baqarah: 96)
