CHAPTER III
PART OF SPEECH AND VOCABULARLY

A. DESCRIPTION

Each word in English belongs to one of the eight parts of speech (Pronoun, Verb, Noun, Adjective,
Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, and Interjection). Each word in English is also either an content
word or a function word. In other words, content words give us the most important information
while function words are used to stitch those words together. Content words are usually nouns,
verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Function words include: auxiliary verbs, prepositions, articles,
conjunctions and pronouns

B. EIGHT PARTS OF SPEECH


1 Pronoun
2 Verb
3 Noun
4 Adjective
5 Adverb
6 Preposition
7 Conjunction
8 Interjection.

1. Pronoun
Pronoun → change Noun or other Pronoun
Pronoun → used to make an easy sand simple sentence, no repeat
Personal Pronoun
Personal Pronoun → Noun people
Examples:

1) I am a Sanitarian.
2) She left me at the campus.
3) This is my book.
4) This book is mine.
5) I see myself in the mirror.

2. Verb

Verb → working word


Verb → describing a subject in the sentence and action
Verb → as predicate in the sentence.

Example :

1) Students read a book everyday.


2) In early September, Sanitarian will start an environmental health project.
3) I remember my English teacher. She was Miss Carol.

3. Noun
Noun → noun to identify people, animal, place, noun / thing, and abstract idea.

Example

1) Late last year our neighbors bought a goat.


2) Portia White was an opera singer.
3) The bus inspector looked at all the passengers' passes.
4) According to Plutarch, the library at Alexandria was destroyed in 48 B.C.
5) Sanitarians are helpful

4. Adjective

Adjective → explain Noun or Pronoun (in front of Noun / Pronoun)

2) The small boat foundered on the wine dark sea.
3) The coal mines are dark and dank.
4) Many stores have already begun to play irritating Christmas music.
5) A battered music box sat on the mahogany sideboard

5. Adverb

Adverb → explain / describe verb, other adverbs, phrase or clause


Adverb → describe manner, time, place, cause or level

Example :
1) I go to campus everyday
2) He seam stress quickly made the mourning clothes.
3) I sleep at 10 o’clock
4) I study at home

6. Preposition

Preposition →together with nouns, pronoun and phrase and other words in the sentences.
Example:
The book is on the table.
The book is beneath the table.
The book is leaning against the table.
The book is beside the table

7. Conjunction

Conjunction → connecting words, pharsa and clause


Example:
I ate the pizza and the pasta.
Call the movers when you are ready.

Examples :
a. Coordinating conjunction
and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet
b. Subordinating conjunction
although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, till, until, when, where,
whether, while
c. Correlative Conjunctions
both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, so...as, whether...or."

8. Interjection
Interjection → emotional
C. Example:
1) oh, that hurt!
2) Oh no, I forgot that the exam was today.
3) Hey! Put that down!
4) I heard one guy say to another guy, "He has a new car, eh?"
5) I don't know about you but, good lord, I think taxes are too high

D. CONCLUSION
Each words in English can be grouped in the one of eight parts of speec (Pronoun, Verb,
Noun, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection). Every words in English includes
content words and function words. There are eight parts of speech which are Pronoun, Verb,
Noun, Adjective, Adverb, Pronoun, Conjunction and Interjection)
