Technology
Schools should be more lenient about the use of cell phones and other electronic devices
in the classroom.
We live in a tech age here in 2019. In fact, we’ve been living in a tech age since the
creation of the internet. The internet-accessible through any piece of technology with direct
access to the internet or indirect access to it through Wi-Fi-is a relatively new source of
knowledge that can be used to apply to anything.
Although it is relatively new, it is still the most credible source of knowledge known to
man because new information can be inputted into the depths of the internet as that same
information is being learned. It’s instantaneous!
With that being said, it is obvious how the use of technology can be used when it comes
to the classroom.
For example, in my AP US History class, my teacher uses technology to share primary
and secondary sources with us to analyze and interpret for our own. My math class does the
same. We use websites to complete homework on topics we learn in class. We also take quizzes
that are graded instantaneously for us to see.
But then there are other classes, in particular religion, where technology is almost
frowned upon. We barely use our laptops and phones are prohibited, as they are in every class.
One day, I was in class listening to the usual lecture about how Jesus is our savior and the
Holy Spirit came to the apostles, etc. I do not use my phone while the teacher is talking as I
would do for anybody that is speaking to me because that is a sign of disrespect. I know that is
rude which is why I don’t use it during lectures, not to mention I might miss something
important. Although I think it shouldn’t matter too much in a classroom setting (it doesn’t matter
if you use your phone in college because you are doing so at your own discrepancy), I’m willing
to compromise and say it should not be used during lectures.
But where I draw the line is after the teacher is done lecturing. I believe it should be used
after lectures. Our phones have the internet in them. Our phones have social media that can
sometimes contribute to an assignment. Our phones can help, is the gist of what I am trying to
say.
And yet on this faithful day, after the teacher was done lecturing, I pulled out my phone
and… to my surprise, she took it from me. She also gave me detention.
Pg. 2

This may not seem like a big deal, but I had just promised my dad the day before that I
would never receive another detention again. Yet there I was after school, sulking in shame and
regret, stressing over what I was going to say to my dad when I got home.
I am aware that the rule is not phones are allowed in the classroom, but that is where I
think the rule should be changed.
At the university level, students are allowed to use their phones, and all of those students
can be assumed to have some level of success, seeing that they made it to that level. So why not
allow a college preparatory school use cell phones as well?
The used of technology should not be prohibited in the classroom and should rather be
encouraged.
