REFLECTIVE PROJECT ESSAY

We, as a group, decided to prepare a unıt and lesson plans about a 6th-grade
unit Occupation. We chose this unit because we think that the ASSURE model
can easily be applied to this topic. Moreover, using the related multı-media
applications stated in the rubric was easy to apply to this topic, and we created
good application examples of the topic Occupations.

When we were preparing the unıt plan and the lesson plans, we tried to trace
the exact structure of the ASSURE model, and we determined our course
objectives, strategies, materials, and evaluation part carefully throughout the
process. However, for us, the most challenging part while preparing these unit
plans and lesson plans were selecting the appropriate strategies for our learner
audience. As they are in the young age group, attracting their attention is quite
hard. Therefore, we needed to find drawing, engaging, and entertaining
teaching activities to reach our predetermined objectives.

To design our unıt plan and lesson plans, we utilized the ASSURE model, and
before writing our course objectives, we first decided the prerequisite skills for
our students to learn this topic better. We thought that to learn Occupations,
students first know simple present tense & present continuous tense, some
basic nouns, and adjectives. Students are required to understand these tenses,
basic vocabularies, and adjectives because, at this level, they are expected to
form basic and daily sentence structures. When we are writing our objectives,
we thought about Daily life and prepared our objectives as the students can
easily express themselves with proper sentence, tense, and vocabulary forms.
Therefore, we arranged our course materials as students can freely and flexibly
use according to the situation they will experience.

Moreover, we choose our materials to teach the topic in a meaningful way to


the students. When we were designing our course plan, we determined and
gave importance to use diverse instructional approaches, as all students have
different needs. For example, for teaching tenses, we used the Grammar-
Translation Method; on the other hand, while we are teaching communicative
skills, we used Task-Based Teaching and Community Language Teaching
approaches. We think that students learn better when visual and technological
materials support their learning process. Hence, we prepared Prezi
presentation, Kahoot, Powtoon tutorials for different purposes, such as
presenting the new subject, teaching vocabulary, and doing practices to
strengthen active learning.

Moreover, we also gave great importance to the participation of students in


classes and enjoying the course with their peers. Therefore, we prepared some
role-play activities that students can actively involve in classes and apply the
new knowledge they gained throughout the courses. For the evaluation, as
much as teacher assessment, we emphasize peer evaluation, and we provide it
through a feedback session in which students assess each other to construct a
collaborative and cumulative knowledge. There are also some teacher
evaluation sessions to measure the mastery level of the students on the topic
and provide them to gain the competency.
