Ww 6 20 25 30 35 Reprinted as amended under Se AMENDED SPECIFICATION. and 1919, PATENT SPECIFICATION Application Date: duly 17, 1919. No. 17,879 / 19, Complete Left = Apr, 19, 1920. Complete Accepted: Oct. 18, 1920. PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION. jon 8 of the Patents and Designs Acts, 1907 154,264 Improvements in Variable Pitch Airscrews. 1, Husny Street, Westminster Londen, Electrical nj declave the nature of this invention to ax follows: Lorsex, of 3, Victoria in the County of ineer, do hereby My invention 2elates to improvements in variable pitch airserews and to that rpe af airsevew wherein the change of pitch is effected by a partial rotation of the blades on their own axes. The object of the invention is to provide an airserew or propeller of this class which shall poses strength accompanied by light- new and at the same time shall be eapa- ble of an_-easy adjustment as regards its pitch variation. ‘To this end according to the invention, instead of securing the blades of the air- serew atthe root end to the outer peri- phery of the hub in accordance with the usual practice T provide each of the said blades with an axial stem or stalk which extends radially into the hub and the inner end of which is secured to the said hub at a point ns near as is practically possible to the sft upon which the but x mounted, By this means the hnb can The made considerably lighter than is possible with existing: construction ‘Avconvenient method of securing the blade to the hub ix by the provision or formation on the end of the blade stem or stalk’ of a spherical protuberance which is clamped between two rings encircling the linb shaft and carried by the hnh so [Price 1-] gs 49 gotate therewith. The Blade tem is held by the clamping rings in such a rray that the sald te can tur on Sit owh axis, the radial outward thrust of the Diade heing taken by a thrust collar pro- vided on the stem and fitted with ball earings. For the purpose of ease of fisation and clamping as above deseribed the hub may Ve constructed in two parts, namely a forward and a backward end. ‘The hub is further furnished with means wherehy the blades can be axially rotated xo as to vary the pitch of the serew. This may conveniently be effected by means of evel wheels upon the blade stems which engage with one another through « centval vertical evel wheel engaging them all and whieh is driven by suitable means, such as by a worm and worm wheel, whereby the blades are rotated simultaneously and in the same direc- tion and through the same angle. ‘To drive the worm or other gear actuat- ing the blade’ stems I advantageonsl niake use of electro-niagnetie means con prising for example a double H-armature Inounted between Ue pole-pieces of two miagnets which are wound in series with the four webs of the armature, means being alo provided for short-cireuiting the windings on either pair of opposite swebs and of reversing the current in the field windings, so as to obtain a progres- sive rotation of the armature in either direction, as desired, the said rotation 50 55 cr) 65 70 5 10 20 35 30 35 40 rr 50 55 60 154, being transmitted to the worm as above stated. By means of this electro- ‘magnetic device the blades of more than one propeller may be varied in pitch simultaneously and synchronously, Te is to be understood that the pase ticular construction of the mechanism above dessribed for imparting to the Dlades of the airserew the rotary motion evessary to vary the pitch of the serew, 04 is given ky way of example only as any ‘ther meaiis for producing the like result may be made use of. Improvements in Variable Pitch Airscrews, I, Hesnr Lummi, of 3, Vieloria Street, Westminster, in the County of Tondon, Electrical Kngineer, do hereby declare’the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be per- formed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following state My invention relates to improvements in variable pitch airserews of the type wherein the blades are each provided with an axial stem or stalk whic extends radially into the hub and are axially rotated so as to vary the pitch ef te screw by nieans of bevel wheels upon the Blade stems which engage with one sather through a contra vertical bevel wheel engaging them all and provide with means wherely it ean’ be turned upon ‘the propeller shaft, According to my invention the pitch of the blades i etied by means of bevel under the control of worm gear Shere the blades are rotated, sisal taneously and in’the same direction and through the same angle. To drive the worm: gear actuating the blade stems T advantageously make use of electvo- magnetic meas of any suitable construc- tion. ‘The bevel wheel keyed upon each stem ‘or stalk hears against @ thrust collar within the hub which thus takes the radial outward thrust of the blade and retains the stem in position im the hub. To enable the invention to be fully understood Iwill describe it by zeference tothe accompanying drawing, in which: : * Figure 1 is an elevation of the lb portion of a variable pitch air-serew con- structed according to the invention. Figure 2 is a sectional elevation at right angles to Figure 1. ‘a indicates the propeller blades, of which four are shewn in the construction illustrated, and 0 the stem or stalk with which the root end of each of the blades is furnished, this rod or stem being, in ‘the arrangement shewn, hollow and extending ‘radially into ‘the sackets c, formed in the ub dy which, for con: 70 ‘venience of assemblage, is made in halves ae clealy shewn, indicates the bevel wheel whieh is keyed upon the inner end of each of the stems or stalks 0 within the hub d, and f is the control bevel-wheél rotatable upon the Dushing yg! the medium throtigh ich the hub is secured. The bushing £13 seyed to the propeller shadt g. ‘The hovel-wheel f engages with each of the bevel wheels ¢, s0 that the latter, and consequently the propeller blades, te al tumed in the same direction and through the same angle when the bevel-wheel fis rotated. To elfert the votation, of the said bevel-wheel j, and thus vary the pitch of the screw, a wormewheel his Keyed upon the said bevel-wheel f which, in its tum, cau revolve upon the pro: pelley shaft! bushing g!, the said worm wheel being in gear’ with a worm! j; the latter ean be actuated by any con. venient means such as an electro. miagnetie motor j, j, in exder to rotate the wornewheel Zand thus effect the desired adjustment of the propeller blades. 4 is a thrust bearing provided in nection with euch of the stems 6 to retain the sai the hub d and 1 is a ball- heaving supporting the inner end of each stem, Lam aware that it has to use one or more electric motors in the ‘boss of an aerial or other screw propeller in conjunction with worm gearing to elfect an alteration or reversal of the pitch by a partial rotation of the blades on their Having now particularly deseribed and ascertained the nature of my said inven- 110 80 83 0 8 100 been proposed 105 vce a tion and in what manner the same is to be peformed, T dele that what T claim is 1.
