How to restore dual boot capability on the HP DreamScreen

The new version of the HP DreamScreen ships with the HP DreamScreen experience and FreeDos, thereby
giving customers the ability to dual boot between the DreamScreen and FreeDos experiences. Customers
can purchase a legal copy of any Operating System and install it instead of FreeDos. During the process of
installing another legal Operating System, the ability to dual boot may be lost.
This document describes how to restore the ability to dual boot between DreamScreen and the newly
installed Operating System. This is a one-time process and should be performed after the installation
of another Operating System.

Step 1: Start the alternate OS install process

Using the CD / DVD of the legally purchased OS, begin the install process.

Step 2: Select the correct hard-drive partition to install the OS

When the OS install process starts, a list of the different hard-drive partitions and their sizes will be
displayed.
It is extremely important to select the partition called “FREEDOS”. This is usually the first entry in
the list, as shown in Fig.1.
Formatting the partition: To format the FREEDOS partition with another file system (e.g. NTFS), select
“Drive options” (Fig. 2). This will bring up additional options (Fig. 3). Now, choose the “Format” option to
begin formatting the partition.

Step 3: Restore dual-boot capability

After installing the legally purchased OS, insert the “HP DreamScreen Dual Boot Restore CD” and restart
the device. Select the “Restore Dual Boot” option as shown in Fig. 5. This will restore the capability to
dual boot between the HP DreamScreen experience and the newly installed OS.

Select OK in the restore complete dialog to restart the DreamScreen. On every subsequent startup, a
dialog (Fig. 6) with options to boot into DreamScreen or into the other OS will be displayed. Use the arrow
keys on the keyboad to select the desired option.
