NIT TRICHY

National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (also known as NIT

Trichy or NITT), formerly called as Regional Engineering College,

Tiruchirappalli, is a public engineering and research institution near the

city of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1964, it is one of

the oldest institutions of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs)

system. The institute is located in a campus of 800 acres (3.24 km²).

NIT Trichy is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by

the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology Act,

2007. [8]The institute has a comprehensive graduate program offering

doctoral degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Currently, the institute has 17 academic departments, three centers of

excellence and one school. Educational programmes here extend beyond

the physical sciences and engineering into humanities and social sciences

such as English and into management studies.[9]

National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked the institute 1st among

the NITs, 7th for architecture[10], 10th for engineering[11], 17th for

management[12] and 24th overall[13] in India in 2019. Federation of Indian

Chambers of Commerce and Industry named the institute as the

"University of the Year" in 2017.[14] The institute has academic and

research collaborations with universities and research centers in India and


abroad including the United States and United Kingdom and is undergoing

accelerated growth through the World Bank-funded Technical Education

Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP).[15]
