Final Exam

January 2, 2017, Tuesday 15:30-17:30, SA-Z04

QUESTIONS:
[25]1. Find all surfaces orthogonal to the planes αx + βy − z = γ where α, β
and γ are arbitrary constants.
[15]2. Find the integral surface of (2y −z)dx+(3z +2x)dy +(−x+3y)dz = 0
which contains the point (1, 1, −1).
[40]3. The Dirichlet boundary value problem is stated as follows:

∇2 u ≡ uxx + uyy = 0, (x, y) ∈ D ⊆ R2 ,

u|∂R = f,

where ∂R is the boundary of R and f is a given function.

(a) State the mean value property of the Laplace equation
(b) Prove the Maximum-Minimum Principle of the Laplace equation
(c) Show that the above Dirichlet boundary value problem is stable
(d) Show that the Dirichlet boundary value problem has a unique solution.
[15]4. Let p(x) > 0, σ(x) > 0 and q be continues functions in (1, 2). Prove
that the eigenfunctions corresponding to different eigenvalues (of the follow-
ing eigenvalue problem) are orthogonal.
