Buying Bassoon Reeds-First year

Some places to get them:

● Forrests Double Reeds
https://www.forrestsmusic.com/bassoon_reeds.htm
-Albion Blue Label ($16, but they usually give a couple dollars off if you order 3 at a time.)

● Bocal Majority
https://bocalmajoritystore.com
-I’ve only recently learned of them, but I’ve heard great things and they have “mini packs” that
could get you through a year of reeds.

● Jones Double Reeds

-Jones Bassoon Reed (Red String)
-You can find these on Amazon, or Miller Marketing (they’re labeled at JBR Standard) for
around $13.

Things to know: When in doubt, go one reed strength up. Even with beginners, I suggest getting
medium soft/medium reeds from most reed makers when available. If the reed is too soft it will
be tough to play in tune, and if it’s too hard I can always file it down so that it’s easier to play on.

Reed Care Do’s and Don’ts

-Get a reed case that lets the reed dry completely. You can order them at any of the websites
listed above, but I’ve also had great luck with Altoids containers. DON’T let it dry in one of the
little plastic tubes that they come in!

-Make sure to soak it in clean water every time you play on it. The time you soak will depend on
how new the reed is and how often you’re playing.
