Math 4
Grade(s): 4
Unit Focus: Multiplication and Division Facts
Unit Dates:
Jan 6 – Feb 14
Teacher: Shalyn Boras
Overview:
This unit serves as an introduction to basic multiplication and division facts. Throughout the unit
students will gain mental mathematic strategies that will help them in both multiplication and
division. The goal is that by the end of the unit students will be able to easily use mental math to
respond to these multiplication and division tables. Lessons are approximately 60 minutes long
and will consist of an instruction portion, a class activity, an individual/partner activity, and lastly
an exit slip. At the end of every lesson students will complete an “exit slip”. Here they will write
down a strategy or tip they learned so they can reflect back on it as the unit progresses. These
exits slips will be hole punched, kept on a clip and referred to as their Strategy Ring. The exit slip
may also consist of a question relative to the information learned that day. They will answer the
question without help to the best of their ability. I will collect the rings at the end of each class
to review then return to students at the start of the next class. This will help me as a teacher to
formatively assess where the students are at and if they are ready to continue on to the next
lesson. Students will also be formatively assessed on their participation and contribution to
discussions and class activities. Summative assessment will consist of quizzes and some of the
individual/partner activities.
Multiplication and division can be a challenging subject and differentiation will be available for
students that require it. During the individual/partner activity portion of a lesson, I will work at a
table with students who may require extra help. This could consist of a reexplanation of the
lesson or helping them with the activity by reading or writing for them. A modified activity may
also be available for those students as well as a reduced work load. WIN (what I need) days are
also dispersed throughout the unit to help students feel more at ease by providing them with
more time to practice the concepts learned.
Rationale:
This unit is designed in a structured, routine-like format. Lessons frequently consist of the same
components so students can become familiar and comfortable with the class. The unit is
organized in terms of the number being learned (meaning one day we start with
multiples of one and move up from there). The purpose of that is for students to build on
their strategies so when they get to the harder numbers, they have more strategies
accumulated to try and solve the problem. The instruction portion and class activity will
focus on the number of the day however the individual/partner activity will focus on a
wider variety of numbers. This will scaffold the information learned while building
problem solving and critical thinking skills.
WIN (what I need) time is also scheduled in this unit to give students the chance to seek extra
help, practice, and become more comfortable with the content. There will be extra practice
sheets, activities, and online math games available for students to use during this time. I will
also check in with students to see where they are at and work with small groups at a table if
needed. The goal of WIN time is to relieve stress and build confidence in the students
multiplying and dividing abilities.
The purpose behind the classroom activities is to formatively assess where students are at
before sending them on their way to work individually. An example of this would be asking a
question and having students write their answer on a whiteboard then raising it up for me to
see. That way I could further explain the challenging concepts while being mindful of which
students may need some extra help. The individual/partner activity gives students the chance to
apply their knowledge. Practice makes perfect so it also serves as another opportunity for
students to practice their multiplication and division. It also gives me the chance to assess what
students can do on their own and time to help students that need it. Lastly as mentioned above,
students will complete exit slips that will form their strategy ring. This is to serve as a reminder
and aid to students as the unit progresses of possible strategies and clues that they could use to
solve the problem. Overall, multiplication and division are a concept students will encounter
many times in their lives and developing these mental math skills early on will benefit them
greatly in their future education and lives.
