Introduction:

Feed water pumps are commonly centrifugal pump. A

feed pump is used in feed water system to increase the
water pressure; high enough so it can be pumped into
the boiler drum. It helps maintain proper working of a
boiler providing continues feed water supply. A
continues feed water supply is essential for steam
boilers; as it not only avoid overheating but any further
damage to the boiler. To ensure a high enough head
and pressure, Boiler feed Pumps have been arranged
in series (multistage pumps). A feedwater pump is
most often driven by an electric motor. Understanding
water quality is also critical for selecting the right materials of construction in your boiler feed
water pump.
Parts of Feed water pump:
1. Casing
2. Impeller
3. Shaft
4. Shaft sleeve
5. Balance chamber
6. Wear ring
7. Mechanical seals
Types of feed water pump:

There are four types of pumps that are most often used for feed water applications,

• Stamped stainless steel vertical multistage inline pumps.

• Multistage horizontal ring section pumps.
• Reciprocating Feed water pump
• Turbo-Feed water pump

Vertical inline pumps can be used if pressure requirements are under 1,000 feet of head, but
pressure requirements over 1,000 ft. typically require a heavy-duty ring section pump.
Environmental effect:
Groundwater is a valuable resource throughout the world. Due to excessive and continuous
pumping it causes serious problems includes,
1. reduction of water in streams and lakes
2. deterioration of water quality
3. increased pumping costs
4. increased noised level due to continuous operation that may cause deaf to the
operator.
