FORMAL SCHOOLING AT THE VILLAGE


SCHOOL

Objectives:

1. to understand the life of Rizal in Biñan

2. to review Rizal experienced in Biñan

3. to have an idea about Rizal

Rizal moves to Biñan

Biñan - where Rizal went to study

PACIANO – accompanied him in his trip on board a carromata.

LEANDRO - Rizal’s cousin who showed him around the town which cause

him to feel homesick.

First day at the Village School

MAESTRO JUSTINIANO CRUZ - Rizal’s teacher in Biñan.

PEDRO - son of Maestro Cruz who made fun of Rizal who challenged Rizal to an

arm wrestling match and lost.

Academic Studies at the Village School

 Able to demonstrate his intellectual superiority

 Emerge as the best in his class at Latin, Spanish and other subjects included to the

curriculum.

Jealous- destroy Rizal’s reputation- numerous school brawls


Academic Instruction at the Village Schools

 Did not enjoy schooling under Maestro Cruz although he considered him an

expert in Latin and Spanish grammar.

 Detested the use of corporal punishment in making the pupils to learn the lesson

for the day, which was highlighted in his novel in Noli Me Tangere.

Life at Biñan

 Systematic and disciplined life

 Took painting lesson under old Juancho, Maestro Cruz father-in-law

 Became the apprentice of the old painter.

End of Schooling at the Village School

December 17, 1870 – Rizal went to Calamba after receiving a letter from Saturnina.
