AsearlyasDecember, youwillheardrumbeatsasparticipantspracticefortheupcomingevent.Duringthecelebration,peopledressedincostumesmadeof indigenousmaterialsgatherinthestreet anddancetothebeatof thedrums.Theirskinisblackenedtorepresenttheearlysettlersknownas"ati".Chantsof"'Viva!SantoNiño!"and"HalaBira!PweraPasma!”canbeheardalongwiththerhythmiccadenceoftribalmusic.ThefirstphraseisatributetothebabyJesusandthesecondisapleanottoget sickundertheswelteringheatofthesun.

Inthelastdecades,different citieshavecomeupwiththeirownversionbutAti-Atihanisuniqueforonemajorreason: it isveryinteractive.Localsarenotjustmerespectators,theypainttheirskinblackwithsoot andjointhegroupsinstreetdancing.Donotbeputoff if youget wet withsomebeerspray,afterallit'sthelocalequivalentofMardiGras.
