Techniques to test vocabulary

For testing vocabulary, there two kind of tasks that can be used namely Progression of tasks and a range
of task types.

 In progression task, task takers should:

1. Recognize whether a word matches an image or not.

2. Provide the correct spelling of a word from jumbled letters.

3. Select the correct word from a bank where the word and its image are given, and copy the
word into the correct gap in a text.
4. Read questions which require one-word vocabulary answers. Test takers must use their own
knowledge to write the answer.

 The test designers have addressed the following points:

1. made tasks suitable for the language level by focusing on vocabulary of an appropriate
(i.e. high frequency v. low frequency) difficulty
2. designed tasks which appeal to the age range by using colour and pictures
3. designed a set of tasks that move from testing passive to active vocabulary
4. followed a communicative approach to testing as far as possible at this level
