THE HOUSE WAS DESIGNED FOR PASSIVE COOLING, having supplementary
mechanical systems if needed. All rooms in the house receive cross ventilation, warmer air being purged through vents as cooler air comes in. DEEP OVERHANGS around the house and sunshade devices on the western facades help in cooling the house. A CANTELIEVERED ROOF projects over the north and southeast, protecting the facades from the midday sun in the summer and allowing sunlight to enter during the cooler December-January months. THE HOUSE IS ORIENTED toward its long side, and most of its glazing facing north from which solar radiation is mildest. SUN CONTROL WINDOW FILM was used on all glazing to filter out heat and harmful UV rays while letting in. ALL WALLS FACING WEST use thermal concrete to insulate against heat. BAMBOO AND COCONUT flooring was used in all principal rooms on the second floor. DECK BEAM bearer supports are made from 100% recycled plastics. LOW VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND (VOC) paint was used throughout the house to minimize air pollution. A 1,200-GALLON “GRAY WATER” TANK captures rainwater from the gutters, water from lavatory drains, air-conditioning drains and shower drains to be used for garden irrigation. DURING CONSTRUCTION a flame tree and natural boulders, which existed in the property, were preserved and integrated into the design. LANSCAPE UTILIZES native plants that have herbal and medicinal uses.
