Pronouncing the plural s

There are three different ways to pronounce the plural s ending in English: /s/, /z/, and /ɪz/.
Examples:
cats /kæt/
dogs /dɔɡz/
bridge /brɪdʒɪz/
Study the following rules:
1. The plural form of words ending in voiced consonants is pronounced /z/
These are voiced consonants: b, d, g, l, r, w, m, n, v, y
Examples:
webs /webz/
beds /bedz/
bags /bæɡz/
bells /belz/
fans /fænz/

2. The plural form of words ending in voiceless consonants is pronounced /s/.


These are voiceless consonants: p, t, k, f
Examples:
weeks /wiks/
bits /bɪts/
backs /bæks/

3. The plural form of words ending in ch, dg, c, z is pronounced /ɪz/.


Examples:
watches /wɑtʃɪz/ slices /slɑɪsɪz/
judges /dʒʌdʒɪz/ blazes /bleɪzɪz/
