AIM:
To study the damped torsional oscillations and to determine the damping
coefficient.
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Shaft
2. Damping Drum
3. Mineral Oil
4. Sketch Pen
5. White Paper
DESCRIPTION:
It consists of a long elastic shaft gripped at the upper end by the chuck in the
bracket. The bracket is clamped to the upper beam of the main frame. A heavy steel
flywheel clamped at the lower end of the shaft is supported from the bracket.
Damping drum is fixed to the lower face of cylindrical flywheel. The drum is
immersed in the oil, which provides damping oil containers to be taken if end for
varying the depth of immersion.
FORMULA:
1. Torsional stiffness, kt= GIp/L (kg/cm2)
Where,
G = Modulus of rigidity
Ip = Polar moment of inertia = πd4/32 (cm4)
D = diameter of shaft
L = Length of suspension of shaft.
7. Texp = Tn / √1 − 𝛿 2
Time taken
Where, Tn =
No.of oscillations
PROCEDURE :
1. With no oil in the container allow the flywheel to oscillate and measure time for
the oscillations.
2. Put the oil in the drum and note the depth of immersion.
3. Put the sketch pen into the bracket.
4. Allow the flywheel to oscillate.
5. Allow the pen to descend, see that the pen always makes contact with the
paper.
6. Measure the time for same oscillation by using a stop watch.
7. Determine the Xn (i.e) amplitude at the starting and Xn+r amplitude after ‘r’ cycles
from the paper.
RESULT:
Thus the damping co-efficient is determined for given damped torsional oscillations
setup.
