THE IMPACT OF BULLYING ON ONE’S HEALTH

I. Introduction

Bullying is a behavior that is often learned in response to stresses in the bully’s life. These

stresses could include strained parental relationships, poor academic performance, unsupportive

peer networks or anxiety regarding physical appearance. The behavior is often repeated and

habitual. While bullies give off the appearance of confidence, it is often the case that their actions

are driven by insecurities. Harassing and overpowering others gives the bullies a sense of

superiority, making up the lack of control in some parts of their own life. It can include verbal

harassment, physical assault and maybe directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on

grounds of, race, religion, gender, or disabilities. The victim of the bully is sometimes referred to

as a “target”.

Statement of the Study

Bullying consists of three basic types of abuse – physical, verbal, and emotional. It typically

involves methods of coercion such as intimidation.

Bullying ranges from a simple one – one bullying to a more complex bullying in which the

bully has one or two more “lieutenants” that are willing to help or assist the primary bully in his/her

bullying activities. Bullying in school and workplace is also referred to as peer abuse. Robert W.

Fuller has analyzed bullying in the context of rankism. This research aims to provide information

on how bullying can affect one’s mental health.

The information that you will read in this paper is based on the information we collected on the

internet and the research that we conducted.

II. Body

There’s a popular theory about the origin of “bully”: Since bulls are so bullish to riders, they

must be the source of the word, right? Wrong. The real origin is muddy at best. “Bully” appears to

have Dutch and German roots, evolving from words for “lover” and “friend.” Indeed, its earliest

meaning was positive. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it was “a term of endearment

and familiarity, orig. applied to either sex, later applied to men only, implying friendly admiration:

good friend, fine fellow, ‘gallant’.” You’d never see sentences today like this one, from 1599 —

“From heartstring I loue the louely Bully”—or this one, from 1754 — “I haue promised to be with

the sweet Bully early in the morning of her important day.”

Bullying can affect anyone. A lot of negative outcomes will happen because of bullying

including suicide, substance abuse, and mental health. It is important to talk to other people about

your problem so that they can help you solve your problem with bullies. People who are bullied

can experience negative physical, and mental health issues. According to stopbullying.gov’s

“Effects of Bullying” (2017), people who are bullied are more likely to experience depression and

anxiety, increased feeling of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss

of interest in activities they used to enjoy. They may also experience health issues and for students,

it is possible bullying might result to “decreased academic achievement”-GPA and standardized

test scores-and school participation. They are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school.

We’ve also learned that a very small number of bullied students might retaliate through extremely

violent measure. In 12 of 15 school shooting cases in the 1990’s (Effects of Bullying, 2017), the

shooters had a history of being bullied. Bullying victims also tend to experience a wide range of

emotions. They may continue to struggle with self-esteem, they may also have difficulty

ST. AUGUSTING ACADEMY OF PAMPANGA

developing and maintaining relationships, and avoid interacting with other people. When I was

still in elementary school, I have a classmate who is being bullied by my other mates. Because of

that, my classmate developed trust issues. He finds it hard to believe what other people are saying

to him. Bullying really is a serious matter and needs to be taken seriously. We should make actions

in order to prevent further harm to people who are being bullied. Defend and help people who are

being bullied.

III. Presentation and Analysis of Data

METHOD OF RESEARCH

This chapter presents the research method, sources of data, data gathering instruments that is

used in the study.

Research Design

The researchers used the descriptive method of research for it is the most appropriate means

of evaluating the cause of bullying among children and its implication to behavior.

Descriptive research is defined as a research method that describes the characteristics of the

population or phenomenon that is being studied. This methodology focuses more on the “what” of

the research subject rather than the “why” of the research subject. Descriptive research is a

quantitative research method that attempts to collect quantifiable information to be used for

statistical analysis of the population sample.

Data Gathering Tools

The material and instrument to be used for gathering data are the questionnaire-checklist.

Questionnaire-Checklist. The questionnaire-checklist is the main instrument used in the

gathering of data. A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and

other prompts for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. Questionnaire is widely

used esp. indescriptive survey studies (Borg & Gall,1983). It is less time consuming than interview

or observation (Bailey, 1982).

ST. AUGUSTING ACADEMY OF PAMPANGA

THE IMPACT OF BULLYING ON ONE’S HEALTH

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers prepared the instruments used through readings of the questionnaire-checklist

of other studies just to obtain some ideas. Finally, the researchers were finally able to do it and it

was presented to the adviser.

After the adviser had corrected and approved the questionnaire, the researchers will xerox them

into 30 copies together with the letter asking permission from the respondents to be part of the

study as well as the teacher’s approval in conducting this study and the distribution of the

questionnaire-checklist to the respondents.

The Respondents

The respondents of this study are 30 selected students and were chosen through simple random

sampling. Sampling is the method by which a researcher chooses a group of respondents. The

researchers used purposive sampling.

According to the website www.investopedia.com (2019) A simple random sample is a subset

of a statistical population in which each member of the subset has an equal probability of being

chosen. A simple random sample is meant to be an unbiased representation of a group.

Treatment of the Data

The responses of the respondents to the questionnaire-checklist were carefully tallied, tabulated

and organized. The data presented, analyzed and interpreted with the used of weighted mean,

frequency counts, percentage and ranking system. \

The presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data will be based on the weighted mean as

shown by the scale ranges as follows (Calderon, 1993)

ST. AUGUSTING ACADEMY OF PAMPANGA

THE IMPACT OF BULLYING ON ONE’S HEALTH

1. For percentage computation:

% = f / n x 100
Where:

% = percentage

f = number of respondents for every item

N = total number of respondents

2. For weighted mean:

TWF
WM = ----------
N

Where:

WM = weighted mean
F = frequencies
W = weighted
TWF = weighted frequency
N = total number of the respondents

Interpretation of Data

This chapter presented, analyzed and interpreted all the data gathered in this study. Presentation

was done through the use of tables. Analysis and interpretations of data done after tabular

presentation.

Table 1. Shows the grade level of the respondents.

Table 1

Grade Level

Grade Frequency Percentage Rank

7 7 23.33% 2

8 7 23.33% 2

9 8 26.67% 1

10 8 26.67% 1

Total 30 100.00%

The table one shows the grade level of the respondents, the table shows that there were 7 or

23.33% of the respondents were Grade 7, same goes to the Grade 8 ranked both as second in the

table, and 8 or 26.67% were Grade 9, same goes to the Grade 10 ranked both as first in the table.

The above data shows that most of the respondents were Grade 9 & 10 but the Grade 7 & 8

almost caught up. This implied that most of the respondents cooperated with the researchers

during the study was conducted at St. Augustine Academy of Pampanga.

Table 2 presents the effects of bullying according to the survey from Grade 7 & 8

Ranked 1 was Lack of attention at home. The item 4 table 2 shows that a big number of

respondents agreed to this factor as indicated by its weighted mean of 3.93 or 78%, this means that

the main reason of bullying others is because of Lack of attention at home.

The children are bullying others because of lack of involvement in child’s interest, activities

and daily life, overly permissive, lack of limits for the child are shown in item 1 and item 3 which

obtained a weighted mean of 3.79 and 3.57 and verbally interpreted as “Agree” ranked 2 and

ranked 3. Items 3) Unsupervised student areas such as restrooms, hallways, locker rooms,

playgrounds, 5) Harsh, physical discipline, 6) Idealize violence, and 7) The child is insecure are

ranked 6.1, 4, 6.2, and 5, with a weighted mean of 3.21, 3.43, 3.21, and 3.29, and are verbally

interpreted as “Moderately Agree”

Bullying can occur in nearly any part, in or around the school building, though it may occur

more frequently in physical education classes, activities, recess, hallways, restrooms, and in classes

that require group work and/or after school activities.

THE IMPACT OF BULLYING ON ONE’S HEALTH

IV. Conclusion

Bullying is a behavior that can affect anyone’s health and can result to many negative outcomes.

Due to this results many victims struggles to get back to their normal lives or have a hard time in

school. Victims of bullying more likely to skip school or quit school. In many cases of bullying

victims tend to be quiet about their experiences because they are scared that the bullies may hurt

them if they complaint. Because of the fear of the victims many cases leads to depression or even

worse suicide. According to our survey our respondents said that the major effect of bullying are

feeling of shame and school avoidance.

Recommendation

The only way to end this problem is by proper parenting because the major cause of bullying is

lack of time of parents to their children. Because if your parents’ guide you and teach you how to

be a good person while you are child you will grew up a good person. If all children have a proper

parenting I think bullying will not be the only problem that will be resolve because parents love

to their children will be always be the greatest thing in life.
