Examples of Functions of Media
1.) Surveillance - Serves as the eyes and
ears for those seeking for information about
our world.
Examples:
•News app – Sending notifications to smart
phones with the latest news.
• Daily news on TV – It reports the weather,
current news and latest celebrity issues.
2.) Correlation – How the media presents
facts that we use to move through the world.
Examples: Interpretative contents prepared by
Journalists who have vast
• Commentaries knowledge of background of
information offering various

clear of reality.
3.) Sensationalization – When the media
puts forward the most sensational messages
to titillate the world.
Examples:
• A feature article on an eight-year old
heroin addict. A journalist wrote a profile of
the boy’s life living with his heroin-addicted
mother and her drug-dealer boyfriend. A
classic example of bad journalism.
• A news circulated about China planning to
build and launch its own moon by 2020.
Said it’s not looking to overshadow the real
moon but to accentuate it instead.
4.) Entertainment – Media outlets such as
people’s magazine, TMZ and blogs like
Perez Hilton keep consumers up to date with
their favorite celebrities.

dance, eat and learn the language of Korean.
6.) Mobilization – With instant access to
media, we can collectively witness the same
event.
Examples:
• The skinned teen case of Cebu – News
announced bounty for the men behind the
rape-slay case mobilizing the people all
around the Philippines.
• Killing of a 17-year old girl in Discord-
The news spread on Discord an online
forum for people with same interests. Many
posted pictures of evidences & portrait of
perpetrator in hopes of capturing the killer.
7.) Validation – To validate the status and
norms of particular individuals.
Examples:
Dramas/ Sitcoms wherein
• Dramas Asians are always depicted as
the “smart” ones while the
