A brief review article on Academic Writing

Introduction:
Precisely, academic writing is considered to be the most prominent and mandatory pre-
requisite for the quality development of an academic institution and the benefit of the
students who dream to pursue their research career in any field. In addition to that, academic
writing is not only focussed by students but, also by faculties in a particular institution. Good
number of publications in the reputed journals have become an important criteria in judging
the students and faculties, both in terms of knowledge and expertise in that particular field.
But, a point to be affixed in mind is that; good number of publications alone doesn’t suffice
for the judgment of students or faculties in terms of the h-index but, the amount of quality
work that has been incorporated. Thus, as a matter of fact; in order to be successful in quality
publications to reputed journals, both the technical expertise in the research field and the
language of communication is expected and that language of communication is the
foundation of Academic Writing.

Discussion of good traits in Academic Writing:

In general, a good academic writing process involves cohesion, coherence, clarity of thought,
reader – friendliness and avoiding plagiarism. These five key factors distinguishes a
professional academic writing work from the one that is not acceptable.
Cohesion: This particular parameter decides, how the contents in an academic writing are
well organized and how well the ideas are put forth in an organized manner rather than in a
random manner. This enables the reader to correlate ideas precisely and make appropriate
reasoning and judgments from the particular academic writing work.
Coherence: Consistency and logical approach are the key tools to an efficient academic
writing work. When speaking about consistency, it means that the thoughts and ideas
presented in the work needs to be in a manner such that the reader understands each and
every line with ease and the succeeding lines are consistent with the previous one. It should
be made rigid in mind that the ideas are expressed in a logical way with appropriate reasoning
so as to make the reader get acquainted with the work that is presented.
Clarity of thought: The dominating gift for humans is the ability to communicate; and then
the question comes; “How would it be performed”. The answer to this is through the language
that is known to everyone i.e., words, figures, numbers so on and so forth. In order to present
his/her ideas in an effective way one needs to master the language. In addition to that, one
should be clear of how thoughts run in the background of the mind so as to present their
thoughts with clarity. If one is able to master their sense of thoughts, the outcome of the
presentation of thoughts stand beautiful and organized.
Reader – friendliness: The article writing work would be of less significance if the work
doesn’t reach the mass population. The only plausible way that would make the work
accessible and understandable by the mass population is the act of expressing the work in a
reader – friendly way. The reader should feel the flow of thoughts that were presented by the
author in order for the reader to make himself/herself comfortable with the work.
Plagiarism: Individuality is the key criteria that everyone expects in the world of research and
no one wants his/her work to be copied by anyone. In general, in any academic writing work;
the content discussed by a particular person belongs to oneself. If a part of the work done by
a particular person needs to be reproduced or copied by another person, he/she has to

acquire prior permission from the owner of the work to do so. Failing to do so, the person is
liable to the concerned authority and he/she would be charged with strict legal actions and
severe punishments would be given to whomsoever it might be concerned. It is believed by
the global community that the allowable plagiarism is approximately not more than 12-15%.

Conclusions
In order to communicate with the world outside, the language stands as a mandatory pre-
requisite for an effective and global communication on the whole. Especially in the field of
scientific and industrial research, person with good skills in English, vocabulary and technical
knowledge would find the expression of thoughts and ideas with ease and effectively
contribute to the global goodness. This language of communication is the groundwork and
foundation of academic writing. Generally, good traits to be followed in academic writing are
cohesion, coherence, reader – friendliness, clarity of thought and avoiding plagiarism. One
has to keep a record of his/her research work, ideas, thoughts and innovations in a safe and
scientific place. This is probably achieved by communicating the research work to the
respective scientific journals like Elsevier, Web of Science etc, which contains a huge number
of scientific database. If one dreams about expressing his/her work in quality journals and
acquire good number of publications, the key is to make the foundation of academic writing
strong. Since, necessity is the root cause of all inventions; people are constantly in the urge
to find out and discover something new in any field that is concerned. This helps them express
their ideas to the world thereby, shaping the future in a way that would bring global ease,
peace and prosperity.
