PARADISE COMPLEX
History:-
A FIRST-IN-CLASS AND "MODERN CLASS" WEDDING MEETING AND EVENT
CENTER LOCATED IN ISLAMABAD.
When owners of Paradise Complex purchased The land, there was a lot of discussion between
invested parties on what they thought they should do with the land .Banquet halls and a
restaurant were not at the top of our list from the get go, but as the investors pealed back the
layers of this amazing location the first option quickly rose to the top was banquet with a super
class food for the entire community. When we finally cleared all the dust, and removed all of the
trash of the place we could really see the elegant beauty that was in the front on main highway
.Everything about this building, from the exposed rough cut rafters to the amazingly preserved
wood and quarry tile floors made investor’s unanimously say yes to the idea that you see today

Learning Outcome # 1:
Understand the features of successful business teams.
Task # 1.1:
Describe the characteristics of successful business teams.
Definition of team:
A group of people with a full set of complementary skills required to complete a task, or job etc.
Basically team members (1) operate with a high degree of interdependence, (2) share authority
and responsibility for self-management, (3) are accountable for the collective performance, and
(4) work toward a common goal and shared rewards(s)
A strong team is the foundation of high-performing business through which the company can
achieve its goals or objectives. If employees do not work together or they are not comfortable
with each other, problems can arise, such as poor organisation, missed deadlines and conflict
within the workplace.
Following are the characteristics of successful business team:
Communication:
In every organization or company communication matters a lot. If there are communication
barriers between the managers and employees it will result in the dissatisfaction of employees,
and it will also affect the profitability of the organization. These barriers will cause disputes
between the employees and the managers, due to which the employees will not work hard, they
will not pay attention toward their duties. In Paradise complex there are somehow
communication barriers between the leaders and the workers due to which sometimes they both
are not paying attention toward their duties. To remove these conflicts the communication factor
must be very strong between both of them.
Trustworthiness:
It doesn’t matter how much capable you are as a leader, if your team doesn’t trust you; you will
never reach your goals. Trust between the workers in any organization is very important. When
your team trusts you, it will increase in commitments. Communication will be improved, and
ideas will be generated more freely, it will also increase creativity. When your team doesn’t trust
you, they will not put their effort in the task given to them by the managers. You’ll be unable to
inspire, influence, and create or generate new ideas.
Good leadership:
Good leadership is very important in every organization; if the leader of the team is not good
then the team will never achieve their goals. This individual essentially works as the glue holding
the team together and should be responsible for setting the pace, offers encouragement and
motivation and keeps all members of the team updated.
They’re organized:
Organization is essential for the smooth running of a business. Without it the workplace can
become chaotic and goals are unlikely to be achieved. Every individual in the company is
responsible for their work, management must ensure that everything in the company is running
according to plan and each member of the team is getting their work completed efficiently.
Holding regular meetings can help the leader to have a check on the employees. (employer,
Mar,26,2017)
Task # 1.2:
Assess the importance of team roles in successful business teams.
Belbin identified nine team roles and he categorized those roles into three groups: Action
Oriented, People Oriented, and Thought Oriented. Each team role is associated with typical
behavioral and interpersonal strengths.
This theory of Belbin is applied in Paradise complex to assign roles to the employees according
to their ability.
The nine team roles are:
Shaper (SH):
Shapers are people who challenge the team to improve. They are dynamic; basically they find
best ways to solve problems according to their organization norms. The Shaper is the one who
shakes things up to make sure that all possibilities are considered and that the team does not
become complacent. In Paradise complex this role is associated to the one who has the ability to
solve different problem which are rising in the company, and who take obstacles as challenges
and have the courage to solve them when others are quitting.
Implementer (IMP):
Implementers in Paradise complex are the people who get things done. They turn the team's
ideas into practical actions and plans. They are typically conservative, disciplined people who
work systematically and efficiently and are very well organized. These are the people who
complete their task on time and are very efficient.
Completer-Finisher (CF):
Completer-Finishers are the people who see that projects or the tasks are completed thoroughly.
They are the one who see each and every thing in detail, so that there have been no errors or
omissions. They are very concerned with deadlines; they want to complete every task or project
on time and will push the team to make sure the job is completed on time. Basically in simple
words they are perfectionists.
Coordinator (CO):
Coordinators are the ones who take on the team-leader role and basically referred to as the
chairmen of the company. They guide the team about their objectives that what are their goals.
They are often excellent listeners and they are naturally able to recognize the value that each
team member brings to the table. They give importance to every single employee. They are calm
and good-natured, and delegate tasks very effectively.
Plant (PL):
The Plant is the creative innovator in the company who comes up with new ideas and
approaches. They thrive on praise but criticism is especially hard for them to deal with, they
don’t want anyone in the company to criticize on their ideas. They are basically introverts and
prefer to work apart from the team members. Because their ideas are so novel, they can be
impractical at times.
Monitor-Evaluator (ME):
Monitor-Evaluators are best at analyzing and evaluating ideas that other people come up with.
They analyses every idea to check whether it is suitable for the company or not. These people are
shrewd and objective, and they carefully go into the depth to check the pros and cons of all the
options before coming to a decision.
Specialist (SP):
Specialists are people who have specialized knowledge and are perfectionist with their work.
They know what is needed to get the job done. They pride themselves on their skills and
abilities, and they work to maintain their professional status. Their job within the team is to be an
expert in the area, and to guide the team members according to the plan. (Team)
Task # 1.3:
Analyze the value of using theoretical models when building successful
business teams.
A good leader will be able to adapt her or his leadership to the goals or objectives to be
accomplished. Goal setting, capacity to assume responsibility, education, and experience are the
most important factors that make a leader successful.
Discussion:
The Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory consist of two pillars: leadership style and
the maturity level of those being led.
In leadership styles, it consists of four basic behaviors which are given below;
S-1 Telling
S-2 Selling
S-3 Participating
S-4 Delegating
The leadership style manifests itself as behavior related to the task and behavior or bonding as to
relationship with the group. At the first step "Telling" behavior simply is a unidirectional flow
of information, where the leader is communicating with other group members and assigns task to
them to complete this task in this manner at this location, and get it finished. Basically
transactional leadership techniques operate here. Now the second type is "Selling" behavior,
now at this stage the leader wants to convince the group that he should lead and will definitely
provide social and emotional support to each and every individual member of the team. There is
two-way communication, but it is clear that the leader is leading. The third type is
"participating" behavior, the leader shares decision making with the group, he or she want to
involve all the group members so that they feel comfortable. In this step the main focus of the
leader is to build human relations where there is less emphasis on objectives. The fourth type of
behavior in leadership style, "delegating" is reflected by parceling out tasks to group members.
The leader still is in charge but there is more of an emphasis on monitoring the ones delegated
with the tasks.
Now the four maturity levels of the group are posited by Hersey and Blanchard with letter
designations are given below;
Each type of task may involve a different maturity level, so a person with an overall maturity
level of M-3 might be only an M-1 with respect to specific work. (Hersey, 1970s and early
1980s)
Learning Outcome # 2:
Be able to support team development.
Task # 2.1:
Explain the stages of team development.
Paradise complex adopted Bruce Tuckman five stages of team development in their organization;
these stages help their employees to work with their team to achieve their assigned goals. These
stages need not always be strictly followed one after the other; teams often get stuck halfway
through the process.
Forming:
Now at the first stage where a new team is going to be formed and is therefore concerned with
orientation; which involves that what kind of people are in the team and what are their tasks or
objectives which they have to accomplish? As this is the starting where they still look to the team
leader for guidance. They have no idea about what the objectives of the entire team are and what
is expected of them. This is why many team members feel insecure. In order to create a good
team, it is the responsibility of the team leader to create comfortable and trustworthy
environment where the team members discusses with them what his expectations are.
Storming:
The second stage where the team is becoming more close-knit and they are gaining each other’s
trust. At this stage they are becoming more creative, they voice their opinions and started sharing
their ideas as a result of which conflicts may arise. The individual personalities of the team face
each other when they give their opinion or confront each other’s ideas. Now at this point it is the
responsibility of the team leader to encourage others members so that they can speak freely
without any hesitation.
Norming:
After the storming stage of the Tuckman stages of group development, the team starts working in
a fulfilling manner. Criticism is not taken personally any more, now there is no such kind of
hesitation to confront each other’s ideas but is considered to be constructive and task-oriented.
The team members are open to each other’s ideas; at this stage they are more creative. The team
cooperates on establishing rules, values, standards and methods. This increases the efficiency of
the team. The team is developing its own identity.
Performing:
Now this the most important stage, where the team functions as a unit and the energy of the
group will benefit the task. All team members know exactly what are their goal and objectives,
what is expected of them and what they want to achieve. They work according to their mission.
Team members support each other to achieve what they want. The atmosphere in the team is
good and the cooperation is clear.
Adjourning:
When the goals of the team have been achieved, now this is the stage where the team can be
dissolved. The team members may experience anxiety as they will have to let go of the group.
This is why they will distance themselves from each other. Now it is the responsibility of the
team leader to pay attention to the dissolution of the team, for example by planning an official
farewell party for all the members or by rewarding them according to their performance.
(Mulder, 2013)
Task # 2.2:
Plan how to motivate team members to achieve given objectives.
Objectives:
Following are the objectives of Paradise complex given below;
1. To become the market leader in the event management industry of Pakistan and beat their
competitors and expand their business all around the country.
2. To provide the best type of food and add new flavors in it which is both hygienic and full of
quality which satisfies the customers’ expectations.
3. Our core value is to provide the best possible functions and events to the customers which
make their experience more memorable and make their memories more beautiful.
4. To provide the best services to their customers which satisfies them according to their
demands and make them want to come back to us again.
Now following are methods to motivate team members to achieve given objectives;
Encourage Creativity:
Supervising doesn’t mean controlling each and every step. It means making sure that all the
organizational activities are being implemented at the highest level. The team leader should
provide freedom to the members so that they can find their own unique ways of solving issues.
Challenge them to think out of the box.
Participation of team members of Paradise complex can be seen on a continuous scale ranging
from a high level participation to a low level participation.
Following are the levels given below;
Inform:
It is the responsibility of the team leader to inform their members about their objective, mission
and their vision. That what are their goals? What they want to achieve? And what are solutions
of the problems which are rising in Paradise complex?
Through this open communication the team members will work accordingly to their missions
and this will also conflicts in the organization.
Consult:
In every decision making process team members have all the rights to give their feedback. It
also involves that how the team members input will influence the organization. Paradise complex
should also consult the solutions of the problems which are rising; this consultation process with
the team members will help the company to resolve every problem quickly and easily.
Collaborate:
To work with the team members and maintaining a strong relation with them, involves taking
decisions with mutual understanding for the development of company and identification of the
solutions.
Empower/Control:
It is a process where the involvement of team members is important to make final decision
making. The collaboration of team members is very important because in every decision they
have the rights to give their views because they are also the part of team, if the leader didn’t ask
them for their suggestion then definitely conflicts will rise and then later on this will become a
big problem for Paradise complex.
Meetings:
Meeting is one of the main methods Paradise complex must use to involve their team members
so that they can give their opinions. Meeting will include the gathering of the employees of
Paradise complex and their management to share their ideas views and thoughts. This will help
the leaders of the Paradise complex to make right decisions for their organization.
Group facilitation:
Having employees in group facilitation in Paradise complex is another way for open
communication. It is a process in which a person selection is accepted by all the employees. With
group facilitation, the employees will be allowed to gather as teams and share the problems
which they are facing in the organization. This will allow the employees to receive solutions and
clarify the issues.
Task # 2.4:
Evaluate ways of resolving conflict between team members.
There is bound to be some amount of conflict in any project. If there is none then it is actually a
bad sign, it means that there is someone who hesitate to voice their opinion.
Following are the ways given below of resolving conflicts between team members;
Learning Outcome # 3:
Be able to monitor the performance of teams.
Task # 3.1:
Monitor the performance of a team against given objectives.
Employee feedback:
Taking feedback from the employees is a very important factor to check that they are
comfortable with the responsibilities given to them from the management of Paradise complex or
not. Getting feedback from the employees will be important as employees are the main group
which is behind the success of any organization.
Quality circles:
The quality circles can be organized with the participation of employees, supervisors and the
middle management of Paradise complex. In the quality circles, the employees will be allowed to
present the issues which they are facing in the organization.
Task # 3.2:
Recommend how to improve performance against given objectives.
Leadership matters:
Innovation comes from inspiration. Teams must be led by managers that go beyond balancing
budgets and schedules. The strongest leaders set goals, priorities and roles for their teams, and
encourage each team member to achieve their personal best while keeping strategic goals in
mind.
The leader of Paradise complex must be clear on vision, that what are their goals and what they
want to achieve. And most important point is that a good must have the ability to resolve
conflicts between team members and also in the company so that the organization can run
smoothly. A leader also knows that, where the team is going and have a clear idea of how
individual efforts lead to accomplishing important strategic goals. Leaders should be open to new
ideas and willing to take risks in order to reach higher performance levels.
Keep learning:
Productivity is increased when team members have all the skills they need to succeed. If leader
of the team identify someone with great enthusiasm who lacks practical skills, encourage them.
Be sure your team knows that skill development is expected, and that no one should rest on their
laurels. Give them a chance to brainstorm with the other departments of the company. If an
employee has an ability to do other roles as well then don’t hesitate and give them a chance.
Small changes to roles can fuel enthusiasm. (Kelly, January 12, 2015)
