Badminton

• Badminton is a game of two or four players using light weight rackets and shuttlecock.
• The objective of the game is to hit the shuttlecock back and forth over the net without
permitting it to hit the floor in bounds on your side of the net.

History

• 2000 years ago, “Battledore” in china


• It originated in India as POONA during the 18th century.
• 1873 badminton was launched in England.
• It got the name as badminton from the name of hometown of the Duke of Beaufort.
• 1893 The Badminton Association of England published the first proper set of rules.
• 1934 the international badminton federation was born.

Basic skills in Badminton

Gripping the Racket

• Forehand grip “Shake hands” with the grip.


- Wrap your fingers around the grip with your thumb on the side of the handle pointing
forward toward the head of the racket.

 Backhand grip
- Hold the racket as you would on a forehand grip. Turn the racket anti-clockwise so that the
V shape moves leftwards. Place your thumb against the back bevel of the handle for greater
leverage and power.

Footwork

• Stance of readiness.
- Your feet parallel and even with your shoulders.
- Toes are pointing towards the net, knees bent slightly, and the racket is kept in the hand
with the other arm resting across the front of the body.

Serves

• Forehand serve.
- Feet should be staggered up facing on the receiving court.
- As you begin the backswing position of the racket, contact the shuttle below waist level
upon its release.

• Backhand serve.
- Right foot forward, body facing the receiving court, stand near the service line.
- The racket arm is in the front of the body, shuttle is in a downward direction, racket head is
below the whole serve’s hand holding the racket.
