What exactly is a carbon tax?

Why is a carbon tax the most viable option?
What is it?
A carbon tax is the idea that the government sets a
price for each ton of greenhouse gases they emit.
The main goal of it is to reduce “and eventually
eliminating the use of fossil fuels whose combustion
is destabilizing and destroying our climate.” The
monetary effects of it would be detrimental enough
to these large corporations that they resort to
cleaner and renewable energy.

William Nordhaus
William Nordhuas is a Yale Economics professor who won the Nobel Prize for his research
on Carbon Pricing. He believes a carbon tax is more efficient than direct government
controls as it allows for the market to require businesses to rethink their emissions in hope
for economic gain.

Additionally, he believes in the foundation of a global climate club that would work on
negotiating a global price for carbon. Any country that does not join would be punished
through tariffs.

The most important idea of his is that to face climate change and carbon emissions, we
must involve the economy as it will have the greatest change to our capitalist system.

Why a carbon tax?
I think that a carbon tax is the most viable option for improving our
global sustainability. Specifically in the United States, our society is
based around capitalism and the success of big businesses. A carbon
tax has monetary disadvantages on these companies until they
change to cleaner or renewable resources. I think that this is more
effective than government policies as it has a direct effect on some of
the largest carbon emitters. A carbon tax might not be a tangible
product, but it will result in largest amount of change if implemented.
