New Orleans Cocktail History

f
New Orleans famously loves a drink and its affinity
with cocktail history definitely backs that up.
Cocktails such as The Sazerac, Hurricane, Vieux Carré & Ramos Gin Fizz were created there while
other classics purely came to fame in the bars of New Orleans.
The word cocktail was first said to be use in New York in the early 1800’s, although New Orleans
wasn’t far behind. Antoine Peychaud who opened his French Quarter apothicary in the 1830’s was
selling homemade bitters for medicinal purposes until he realized that they tasted better with a
splash of brandy and some sugar.
Bitters has become a modern bar staple with, Peychaud’s, becoming a must have. He is also credited
with the invention of The Sazerac, now the official cocktail of New Orleans.

SCOFFLAW
Bulleit rye whiskey - dry vermouth - plum grenadine - citrus / 20
The Americans tried to make fun of those who drank during prohibition, by calling them a ‘Scofflaw’. So of course the French
thought it would be a great laugh to make a cocktail by this same name. We love a great story behind a delicious drink!
o
BOULEVARDIER
rittenhouse rye whiskey - sweet vermouth - campari / 20
The is the Whiskey Lover’s Negroni - This classic has been around since 1927. While most would look to use a bourbon,
we’ve found a delicious formula in using a rye whiskey, balancing its soft spice notes with the sweet vermouth.
o
NEW YORK SOUR
buffalo trace bourbon - local red wine - citrus - bitters / 20
This is the next step up from a Whiskey Sour - introducing a rich red wine to the formula. While it is common to float the
wine, we prefer to include it as an equal contender into the mix for a homogonised flavour and beautifully vibrant colour.
