It is the celebration of the sacrament ofthe Eucharist, where we partake of the Body and Blood of Jesus as nourishment for our spiritual life. We refer to the Eucharist as a thanksgiving, sacrifice, communion, or memorial, depending on what aspect of the sacrament we wish to emphasize. Today's solemnity focuses on anamnesis or remembrance. When Christians gather to celebrate the Eucharist, they celebrate the anamnesis of the Lord Jesus until he comes again in glory. Whats recalledis notsimply a remembrance of the past, buta living, collective memory that is brought alive in the celebration and which continues to shape the life of the community. We see this in the anamnesis of Jesus’ Last Supperthat Paul hands onto the Christians in Corinth (Second Reading). That community was beset by division, and their Eucharistic gathering was marked by quarrels, abuses, and contempt for their poorer members (1 Cor 11:17-22). The apostle reminds them that their behavior is a betrayal of the memory of that night when Jesus gave his body and blood as food for his disciples, the same body and blood that he would give up on the cross the following day. A tradition kept by the evangelist John notes that on ‘that same night, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples, an act of utter humility and self-sacrifice. Paul invites the Corinthian Christians to come to their senses and wait for one another. Division and fighting betray the “body of the Lord;both as a sacrament and as a community of believers. The Gospel tells us of the multiplication of the five loaves and the two fish and the feeding of the multitude. The action of Jesus—taking the loaves, looking up to heaven, breaking the loaves, and distributing these—are the very same actions of Jesus at the Last Supper. The memory of the feeding of the five thousand, therefore, points to the Eucharist of the Last Supper when Jesus finally gives the “true bread that comes down from heaven. This is the same miracle that John uses as the starting point of his presentation of Jesus as the Bread of Life. After the people have been satisfied, they searched for Jesus, hoping to have more bread. Jesus told them to look for the bread that gives eternal life: himself. Pope Francis said in his homily for the feast of Corpus Christi in 2017 that the idea of ‘memory’ ‘comes up again and again. The “living bread, come down from heaven’ (Un 6:51) is the sacrament of memory, reminding us, in a real and tangible way, of the story of God's love for us. The Eucharist is the memorial of God's love. There, Christ's sufferings are remembered, and we recall Gods love for us, which gives us strength and support in our journey. Thisis why the Eucharistic commemoration does us so much good: itisnot an abstract, cold, or superficial memory, but a living remembrance that comforts us with God's love, Today, Pope Francis continues, the word of God says to each of us: Remember! Remembering all that the Lord has done for us is the foundation of our personal history of salvation. Remembrance is essential for faith, as water is for a plant. A plant without water cannotstay alive and bear fruit. Nor can faith, unless it drinks deeply of the memory of all that the Lord has done for us.’Remember Jesus Christ” —Fr. Gil A. However, aside from laboring for our parents and families, we also acknowledge our need to be devoted in discerning our vocation. We yearn for peoplein authority whom we can look up to as regards integrity and credibility, as well as look to for guidance and accompaniment.” “Our hearts are open to see and embrace role models who give witness to the goodness oflife.... We want elders to journey with us, to be approachable and not untouchable, to level with us to a certain extent, to walk the talk, and to make us sense that we are all equal.” “(tis our ultimate hope that as we seek our purpose, we are given much life.... We wish to be given more opportunities to share ourselves: not just with and for our families, but with and for the rest of the community, our country, and the Church.” Entrance Antiphon {Cf. Gospel (Lk 9:11b-17) P — A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke All — Glory to you, O Lord. JESUS spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured. As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, “Dismiss the crowd so that they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.” He said to them, “Give them some food yourselves.” They replied, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for all these people.” Now the men there numbered about five thousand, Then he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty.” They did so and made them all sit down. Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets. — The Gospel of the Lord. All— Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
