Hear No Evil

The night seemed endless in the quietness of the balcony. Night crickets chirped in the

bushes and the chilly mid-autumn breeze froze the bones of the two. The moon shone down on

the woman as she looked into the eyes of her son, who was sleeping in her lap. Her son opened

his eyes as he woke from his sleep.

“Mom, will the new school be fun?” he said.

“Of course, Jimmy.”

“And no one will make fun of me again?”

“No one. I promise. Well…”

The woman tried to say something else but stopped herself in the middle of the sentence.

She made her son sit next to her and avoided his sparkling eyes. Ever since her husband

died, she was responsible for taking care of their only child who was often bullied by his

schoolmates due to his hearing disability. In the serene autumn night, she missed her husband

more than anyone else.
