DOH: Dengue cases rise four times this year

REPORTfrom Government of the Philippines Published on 12 Oct 2015 —View Original

Oliver T. Baccay

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Oct. 11 (PIA) - - The prevalence of dengue cases in Region 2 this year had
gone up by four times when compared to last year, said Dr. Romeo Turingan, Department of Health
(DOH) focal person on dengue.

Turingan said from January to October 3 this year, Region 2 has 8,084 dengue cases while there were
only 2,391 cases of the same period last year.

He said most cases were recorded in Isabela with 3, 650, followed by Cagayan with 2, 087, Nueva Vizcaya
with 1, 382, Quirino with 753 and Batanes with 212 cases.

He said of the total cases, 15 deaths were recorded this year in which majority of them were children.
“One of the most important reasons for the tremendous increase in dengue cases was due to the
presence of the four strains of dengue virus circulating in the country,” Turingan said, adding that climate
change may also aggravate dengue incidence.

He also admitted that there is a dengue outbreak in Santiago City, Luna and Delfin Albano towns in
Isabela.

Turingan said the immediate declaration of an outbreak is due to the continuous increase in dengue
cases in said areas as compared to their previous dengue records.

“Affected local government units are now doing its best to put a stop to the increasing number of
dengue cases. We will also help them contain the situation in their areas,” he added.

DOH health promotions officer Floro Orata said it is only through public participation that we can contain
the spread of the disease.

Orata said people had no reason to panic about dengue if only they take precautionary measures against
dengue mosquitoes and keep their house clean.

“People should make it a habit to enforce search and destroy operations to eliminate all potential
dengue mosquito breeding sites,” Orata added.

The health promotions officer likewise urged barangay officials to mobilize all sectors in their areas to
conduct preventive and control measures, and enforce sanitation such as dredging of clogged canals and
other waterways to stop the spread of the disease. (ALM/OTB/PIA-2/Cagayan)
